On my old '06, there is an electronic sensor for the air temp on the housing. Removing this will throw off the computer. Is your filter housing electronic free ? And from what I understand removing the housing this will not help outside of giving you more room in that area. Plus for my truck, it would be a PITA getting the filter on / off for cleaning or replacing.

You would also be eliminating your air temp sensor and your MAP sensor if you do away with the tube. Not 100% but I'd assume you would have to contact your tuner and have them adjust your tunes accordingly. However I can't see any real gain from that other than you'd be sucking in hotter air since the filter would be trapped between the manifold/turbo/Exhaust.

Without having some sort of piping there's a chance of your filter collapsing from the suction
Yes and you have a MAF in the intake tube as well. That and you'll be sucking hot air in from the exhaust manifold. You need those sensors
