    Rear end clunk

Both my cousin and I have 2016 2500 trucks only difference is mine is stick and his is auto. His seems to have quite a bit of play in the rear end as in backlash adjustment. It clunks going from forward to reverse and when on and off throttle. As compared to my rear diff which is pretty tight. Both trucks have under 10k for mileage. Dealer says all good but he and I agree it seems pretty excessive. Anybody else have something similar going on?

It's a simple adjustment they can make. Requires a dial indicator and a small tool. Backlash on the gear is .005 to 008. It is mandatory for the dealer to have these tools. I made my dial holder. If the dealer says it might be more than tolerances, it needs to be changed as it will wear the gears improperly over time.

Just remember the .005 adjustment is exasperated at the pinion output. So you can't really tell.

It;s worth the pan drop just to get new oil. LOL

American was a GM company if that tells you anything. . . . .

I have the same exact issue.

What did your friend end up doing?

My backlash is at .009”. I’m at 46k and still under warranty so I think I’m going to take it in but fear that they will also say it’s normal but I guess I can show them the video of me measuring .009 and they would have to adjust it?
