    Tailgate Not Locking?

I just noticed that my tailgate is not locking with my remote control.

I don't remember when I last knew it worked; I don't often pay attention to it.

Where exactly should I start looking to troubleshoot this?

Side note: I'm not sure if it matters, but I replaced my key fob a few months ago, and I'm not sure if a specific fob is linked to a particular module of the tailgate component.

I'm not sure when it stopped working, honestly.

I would start with a full system scan to check for trouble codes.

Next, check pin #1 at the tailgate lock motor for momentarily battery voltage when the lock command is given.

See the diagram below with the tailgate lock circuit highlighted.

If your new key FOB is working for the door locks, then it should also lock the tailgate.

Is there any specific system that I should check for the tailgate motor?

For example, I know that recently, when I was working on my seats, I had to check the HSM specifically.

Is there something like that for the tailgate?

Check the BCM with your scan tool.

I checked a few of the modules, and there were a couple of random circuit things related to lights.

The body control module had these two codes, but I cleared them just now.

    Re: Tailgate Not Locking?

Those codes won’t affect the tailgate motor.

You could test the motor to see if it’s good.

Disconnect the harness on the tailgate motor.

Then, on the motor terminals, we momentarily apply 12V DC to one terminal and ground to the other terminal.

For example, attach 12V to the motor terminal #1 #2 to lock and the opposite to unlock.

DO NOT APPLY POWER FOR VERY LONG, JUST MOMENTARILY!

It could be the plastic clip that connects the solenoid to the lock.

Can you hear the solenoid when you lock/unlock?

The access panel inside the tailgate is easy to remove and see what is going on.

Here is the solenoid operating on my 2017.

I lock or unlock the truck and I can feel a clicking within the solenoid, but it is not moving. It is stuck in the extended position. I'm not sure if I am able to normally, but I cannot squeeze the solenoid inwards to the closed position. I am guessing this means that the solenoid needs to be replaced if the signal is getting all the way to the solenoid via the physical clicking?

I just took a pair of fire department cutters, used the prying end, and forced the solenoid into the compressed position.

It seemed jammed outwards, but now it is unlocking and locking.

I wonder if that is still a sign that the solenoid is going bad and must be replaced.

If I'm mistaken, there was either TSB or a recall on the tailgate about it opening for no apparent reason.

I don’t know if your truck is part of that, but I'm sure you got it working again.

My 2016 was under that recall.

My tailgate would pop open for no reason, just hitting a bump in the road.

They said they added some clips to keep the solenoid from advancing too far.

It sure wouldn't be necessary to clean the area and put some white lithium grease on all the moving parts.

Also, disconnect your plugs and make sure they areexcellentd and clean, making good contact.
