    Replacin’ batteries...

Is there any sort of requirements or things ya oughta avoid with batteries?

A guy at work once had a Duramax and he said he made the mistake of removing both batteries before installing both new ones and apparently that kinda caused him a big headache.

Anybody have anything like that happen with their Cummins?

Biggest mistake you can make is replacing 1 IMO. If one is in fair health and the other is bad and the bad is replaced then then fair one will pull the life out of the new battery quick and you will continue that cycle of replacing batteries.

Make sure the CCA are enough on new ones. Brand really doesn’t matter but look at what the warranty/prorated periods are for the best value. I have had good luck with interstates in my current 4th gen. Heat, cold, and not running will kill batteries in a hurry. I usually expected about 3 years out of a pair when in TX on my daily driver

There are only 3 things I believe in for my batteries:

    1. only buy quality batteries only
    2. trickle charge to full before installing
    3. keep a trickle charger on them if I don't use the truck for any long length of time.

I get 10+ years out of them doing it this way.

    OldBiker: I agree 100%!
I work shift work - so my days off are either 3 in a row of 7 in a row.
So the JUDGE will sit in the garage - most of that time. I'm older now & just don't drive around to drive around!

When I know she's not going to be moved for a couple days I hook her up - super easy & Fast - I have adapters installed where I only have to plug into the drivers side battery.
(Since it basically feeds the passenger side battery).

It’s really an awesome peace of mind especially in the winter.
I can normally plug the G750 in when I get home from work and in the morning time before I leave for work unplug and have both batteries fully charged before going back out in the cold.

Normally in the summer time I will plug it in Once a month for 24 -48 hours.

But when the time comes - I will replace both at the same time.
As for Brand - No Idea at this time.

But to answer your question - No I'll effects will come from unhooking & swapping out both batteries at the same time. Your 68RFE might have to relearn - but that's about it.

Absolutely replace in pairs, personally I like the AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) type but they are expensive. I always make sure to clean the posts and clamps with a wire brush, wipe them down with alcohol and apply a No-Ox grease to prevent oxidation.

Much obliged for everyone’s replies, but this here was actually the big detail I was lookin for. The crapola I heard got me thinkin that havin both batteries unhooked at the same time would erase the ECM or some kinda weirdness.
