To grid heat or not to grid heat. That is the question.

My Cummins isn’t my first diesel I’ve owned, but the first one with a grid heater. I’ve noticed some people are deleting those. What’s the reason? Any downfalls to deleting your grid heater?

The grid heater by function and design is pretty benign. On a truck with stock emissions, the EGR function pulls in a lot soot to the intake which passes through the grid heater. Over time the grid heater will get caked with soot and really hurt performance. This was especially true on trucks that idle alot and on the early 6.7 Cummins trucks where the factory tuning used a lot of EGR to support the DPF Regen process.

I’ve been digging more into it since I’ve posted this thread. I get the better air flow, but winters here in the south eastern part of Washington State can get bitter cold, sub 0 temps. Can just plugging in the truck overnight help with the cold starts if you have a grid heater delete?

Deleting depends on where you are in the temperate zone. If you have really cold winters or live in the mountains, don't delete it. But there is an alternative.

Shibby Engineering makes a really sweet set up. You'll be very happy if you go with this set up. Do the grid heater delete, a Shibby Air Horn and a remote heater. This will remove that restrictive factory heater, vastly improve the air flow and give you a remote heater that works better than the factory one. Go figure. Got the bucks. You'll be very happy.

I know of one of our vendors who is a dealer for his stuff. He was one of the originals in the 6.7 air horns and the pioneer of the remote heater. Good stuff. I was one of his BETA testers back in 08, so I'm kind of partial. LOL I've seen the others. Not as well made in my book

We'll keep a light on for ya
