    Automotive/Industrial camshaft stats

    Greets,

I have 2 12-valves, a 175hp automotive one needing to be rebuilt and a 208hp industrial firepump engine that I'm trying to fix but which may also need to be rebuilt. Not a problem, it's actually the only way to really know what I have. I suspect these use different camshafts but cannot find any data like precise duration/lift for them, Any pointers welcome. Thanks.

I was just warming up to another cummins forum when I decided that it was more about chrysler than about cummins ..so I followed another member over here. Time will tell. There is BTW a newsgroup called mad.dog.diesel in need of a little revitalization, I figure there's a need for an unmonitored DMZ for all-diesel flamewars :-)

    to the forum @fitterski

Sorry I can't help here, but it will be a bit and I'm sure you'll have some chime in soon. Iiked the clip, but it does sounds a bit rough.

Red face Re: Automotive/Industrial camshaft stats

I checked the compression on the 208 horse model, 420-425 psi which is above Cummins' minimum 350 but good diesels I think ring in around 490. The roughness is narrowing down to maybe an injector or pump issue. I have very little experience with diesels, rebuilt a deutz 4-holer 9 years ago and that was a success mostly due to luck

Man I wouldn't know what to tell you on the specs. Why not call one of the cam manufacturers, like maybe Crane and see what they say.

I can tell you the industrial motors have more torque as well as horsepower. Emissions were ignored way back too. However, I do recall some differences in bearings too. The industrial engines were built to run at a steady speed. 1500 RPM as I recall. Where a street engine was made for variable speeds. Not sure what the difference was. Being an avid Mopar guy, I know the industrial Hemi was vastly different than the street Hemi. Different cooling, bearings, cams seals.

You might try to contact Cummins too. Give them the serial numbers. They can definitely tell you.

The compressor looks run of the mill (just trying to read the tag) but the turbine is HUGE in comparison and is water cooled. That will give more torque which alone could account for the extra 30 hp at otherwise comparable speeds. My industrial 'find' was a firepump that immediately went to 2100 rpm. You could squeeze one of these into a truck but it would be a tight fit on he top. In the 60's/70's we used to leave chrome superchargers stick out of the hood, so what's could be wrong with some powdercoated turbos?

It 'depends'. According to one advice I got, the firepump 5.9's with the Lucas CAV injection pump use a static 5 degree RETARD supposedly for easier starting and less pollution as opposed to the run of the mill 0 degrees. This makes for 5 degrees less advance throughout the rpm regime.

    Thank you!

BTW that 5 degree injection retard was in error, it's 5 degrees of static ADVANCE, the others usually start with 10 degrees of static advance.
