I happen to talk to Cummins couple years back and he said all cummins (Dodge) left the factory with Valvoline Full sync.

I take it was probably a synthetic blend? http://hd.valvoline.com/our-products/valvoline-premium-blue-8600-es-synthetic-blend-heavy-duty-diesel-engine-oil

I asked it it was a blend and he said no, full sync. But they do approve Valvoline and I would assume they get a discount for the factory for recommending it. I agree with what was mentioned above. Any good brand FULL sync oil will work. I can get into this real deep, but that is a long story.

Let the others speak, but I vote to get full sync and run an oil sample on it to see if it within perimeters. Every engine is different, and some like one brand while others like another. After running several different brands and oil samples, my truck like Rotella T6.

Where can I get an oil sample tested? Would I sample before I changed oils several times? My first diesel/truck.

    Re: Another Oil Question

There are many companies out there. I use BlackStone out of Fort Worth IN. ( http://www.blackstone-labs.com )

You get a sample when you drain at oil change. You need a sample kit before you do it. They will send you one, or call whatever company you choose to get one. They have 2 test. The standard or with TBN. If you want to know the life left in the oil, the addition of the TBN will tell you. This sample cost me $38.00. Others are close to that.

I always went for the t5. The original. But I stopped at year model 2012 on that. After 2012 I just started using amsoil in everything LOL.

The 2006 that I own currently still gets the good ol Rotella t5. One day I'll swap over to full but she's loving the mix she gets as of now.

I also agree with the above said on oil testing. Amsoil has some as well that you can buy and I was never disappointed with them either.

Really just your choice on that.
