    break in period before towing

just took delivery of a 2500 outdoorsmen 6.7L cummins 4x4 and an 8K lbs 5th wheel camper. I read in the manual that towing is not advised until at least 500 miles have been run on the truck....Is this true and/or good advice? maybe wait even longer? I was thinking of heading south to Georgia from Canada for a couple of weeks but I only have 200 miles on it....any advice or suggestions from the
    membership would be
    appreciated....

I would go with what the manual says. It gives the rear end gears time to settle in and mesh together.

Agreed! From what I understand it's more or less for the gears and what not.

Absolutely sound advice wait at least 500 miles gives all the fluid time to wear and coat gears and get in sync

I am.on no way saying that the advise given so far is wrong but at the same time, I know guys drive off the lot in a new truck pulling the same trailer they came in with on thier old truck. I guess what I'm saying is wait as long as you can but I wouldn't let a couple hundred miles keep me from taking my new truck on a road trip.

    thanks guys...appreciate all the responses

    on another note:
I did tow my camper about 10 miles just to test the Ram 5th wheel with slider in the factory prepped system....im not at all happy with the noise it makes. seems like there is too much play between the picture frame and
the slider causing this....when I tried to put the rubbers that come with it in between the two components the pins would no longer go in.....not impressed.....am I doing something wrong?

In my manual it says "recommended heavy towing in first 6000 miles"

The above posters are correct. Cummins states the engine is good to go when you get the truck. In fact, NOT towing actually can actually delay engine "break in"--up to 10K miles. BUT Ram wants to give all the non-engine moving parts a little time to "get to know each other". I tried my best but had to tow before the recommended mileage passed, but I tried to take it easy, and the first 11K miles have been good!

Technically, Ram is covering their butts. Do whatever you're going to do with it right out of the box. If it's going to fail, it won't discriminate when

I agree wth the old coot.

When mine was new, I did the 500, then towed and kept it easy on the speed for the first 1,500 miles .. as my book said.

But my friend bought new .. had less a tad over 100 miles .. lock and loaded a 10,000 pound trailer, loaded his daughters belongings and move her from SoCal to Denver. Three trips and that was done .. then his home on wheels for the family vacation trip. He never had a problem.

When you take your trip with the trailer, take it easy to give her a chance to stretch her wings, then .............. (actually give you a chance to get the feel of the truck handling and suck)
