    68RFE Thermal Bypass Valve?

I have a Revmax bypass valve with a AFE trans pan in my truck.

My trans used to be at 168-170 empty on my commute.

Now with a deep trans pan and bypass valve it only gets up to 130 on my 30 mile stop and go commute.

I haven't towed my 10k trailer yet so I don't know how much it helps keeping the trans cool towing.

I will keep a close eye on what my trans temp gets up to this afternoon while sitting in traffic.

    MC: Mine is very similar!

    Previous temps averaged 168-210*F

Now I never see over 160*F even while towing!

I Now believe with the OEM by-pass in place - That tiny little valve (in the open position) still restricts A lot of flow to the cooler.

Best mod so far. Considering Heat is one of the main contributor to failure with this transmission.

After looking heavily at the OEM block & that tiny valve inside the block it wouldn't take much sludge or crud to cause it to fail closed - which would cause major overheating issues.

One less worry & much cooler ATF temps.

Longer life from both the Fluid & Transmission.

I do have plans on adding a PPE pan next spring - which incorporates a drain plug for easy drain & refill service - scheduled for every other summer before the camping season.

Red Line C+ ATF will continue to be used.

My understanding was 110*F-160*F is ideal for operating temps.

How long does it take to come up to 130?

I've been looking at this mod for when I change trans fluid along with deep pan and potentially VB.

This chart has been in my photos for a few years - I have kinda just accepted it!

I do believe that today’s synthetic oil‘s & ATF fluid’s have improved by leaps and bounds & these fluids can handle the heat a lot better so take this chart with a grain of salt.

I still like to stay close too the safe zone if all possible.

It took about 5 miles to get up to 130, the rest of my stop and go 30 mile (1hr) trip got the trans to 158.

I did the bypass for piece of mind just In case it did end up failing while I was towing.

Any guess as to why 150 degrees has less life expectancy than 175 degrees as shown above?

I honestly feel ATF antiwear additives are similar to oil additives.

Each additive has a specific temp it has to reach to be at its fullest potential & give the best wear protection.

Basically the reasoning how Castrol showed years ago that Most engine wear occurs during warm up - Not start up!

165-195*F is ideal for the ATF in my mind.

Others might disagree - That's OK it's only opinions.

I want my ATF to warm up as fast as possible - Due to I want those anti-wear additives within the ATF to be at full strength to give my 68RFE the Best protection.

(I feel temperature plays a large part in this).

But in the same breath - I would much rather have my 68RFE run cooler then always running over 210*F.

I have honestly - never heard of a transmission failure due to running cooler then 165*F.

With today's synthetic ATF - I really have no idea what to Hot actually is - with failure in mind.

Like I stayed above - ''Take this Chart with a grain of Salt"

It's not the Temp Bible only a simple guideline chart.

SyN Disclaimer: Once again - Just my simple minded opinion!

My only question is running the bypass in the winter. Like when the temp outside is 0 or 10 degrees.

I bought one from Revmax but now wondering if I should even put it on because of the not knowing with the colder temps outside.

I’ve looked for operating temp chart for ATF+4 but haven’t found much.

I’d imagine there is an optimum range like 130*-190* or something.

    Talked to Revmax today.

They said a minimal temp for a 68RFE would be 80 to 100 degrees.

I’d say this would take a while in 10 degree weather.
