2016-2017 68rfe shift flare from TCC unlocking between gear shifts

Howdy folks. I've been chasing down and dealing with complaints with excessive rpm flare between gear shifts 3-4, 4-5, 5-6 on the 2016-2017 68rfe models especially. The older models do it some, but the 16-17 models do it terribly. Bottom line tuning can't fix it.

What is going on is the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) unlocks between shifts during normal operation. Well the 16-17 models have a "looser" converter or one that has a higher stall speed than the older trucks. When you combine a looser converter with the normal TCC unlocking between gear shifts, well you get a rpm flare that we cannot fix with tuning.

If you want this gone, you have to change the converter unfortunately.

Ok got a question. My buddy 2012 dually seems to have something like this. While driving probably 2 or 3 gear he can kinda get in it for a second and let off then a second later you get a rpm jump just for a second tho. Is this kinda the same thing or are we looking at something different. I'm not sure what tuning he has I think EFI. (Yes I've been trying to get him to switch cause he isn't very happy with the guy that sends tunes) anyway. Thoughts on this ray?? If it makes sense what I'm saying ......

Not sure what's up here. I know the 2012s have a much tighter converter and flare is rarely an issue as far as the converter is concerned.

Yea it's pretty annoying when we are in his truck. Cause it does it all the time. I'll try to get a video of it and post. Maybe when you see what it does you might know of a direction to take. Thanks ray

    What tuning do you have?

Bottom line is that we cannot keep the TCC locked between shifts with tuning. So the looser your converter is, the more you'll notice the flare between shifts.

Here is a comparison... My 2012 will show a slip value around 700 taking off while the converter is unlocked. A 2017 similarly equipped as mine will show a slip value of over 1400 taking off from a stop...that's a huge difference.

I'll have to see what mine is when taking off. Wonder if mine is loose/old/replaced at some point.

Just keep in mind that slip value can vary based on load, gearing, etc...but I see enough between the older trucks and newer ones to know there is a difference. I've confirmed this with outside sources that Ram did make stall speed changes over the years.
