Trying to buy a Cummins

Hey guys! Ok so I'm looking at buying a 2nd or 3rd Gen Cummins. And I've always been told that 96-98 were the so called "Golden Years" but correct me if I'm wrong.

Also what problems did the 98.5-02 trucks have?

And in all of your guys' opinions, what years are the best to try and look for?

I had a 99 i loved it ..the issues i had were common one blown tranny by like 115k and a cracked dash that seems to happen to alot of people. .dont know if that helps at all but thats the issues i had

98.5-2002 had a VP44 injection pump that is a little more picky on fuel flow. That is best solved with a fass or an air dog, or another lift pump along those lines. I have had one of each generation except 4th gen. I honestly loved my 03 the most.
