That's kind of what I was getting at. The electronics on these engines are capable of self correcting for an imbalance and often don't show up enough with a cutout test. This is the hardest thing we look for today because we rely on the electronics too much. I like your "vibration" test to find some idea of where to start from. I just happen to be lucky enough to be able to go further, and thought maybe I would add some extra that might help. I truly feel for your frustration at trying to find these problems.

New to the fourm, but I'm kinda old school, If you use a broom stick like a stethoscope, you can hear when the injector is firing.

So let me get this straight and I want to hear from everyone on this please. Everyone support the use of fuel rail pressure caps for diagnosing injectors??? Cause I do! I've used them several times. I was looking at another cummins forum and the first one I looked at was about injector kill test without scan tool. Just me helping another cummins guy out I said use some injector fuel rail caps. You can get them from accurate diesel.

Yes we all need to do this as there is to much danger of high pressure fuel spray any other way. I had an injector go bad and didn't have any rail caps at the time . I do now thanks to Tim @ Accurate Diesel. I started this thread because I wanted to share a backyard trick for determining a bad injector which I did have and replaced that injector because of a trick I was taught a simple trick to determine which ink is bad and it was to just touch the injector lines and the one with the most vibration is the bad one. And for me this tick worked but would I do it again NO WAY it's to dangerous So yes I agree fuel caps are a must!
