    Inner timing

Hey guys my inner timing gasket is leaking and I was wondering how hard it would be to do it myself?

Are you talking about the gasket between the timing case and the block?

Camshaft has to come out, it's a rather involved process

I though the cam could stay just all the gears had to go

You would have to use a cam gear puller and then press the cam gear back onto to camshaft for re installation

Generally, yes. I've known one or two people who have pulled the gear, and they didn't recommend it. There really isn't a good way to press the gear back on in the truck.

What's involved in pulling the cam out?

The hardest part of pulling the cam is retaining the lifters so that you don't drop them in the oil pan and have to pull the pan to get them out. Standard procedure for most is to use 1/2" wooden dowels modified to fit snugly in the top of each lifter. From there there is just a bolt on retainer and then carefully sliding the cam out while supporting it.

Obviously, to get to the cam you need to remove everything in the way of taking the timing cover and sliding the cam out the front of the motor
