Tuners are in the catagory here, although not specificity stated.

Stacks are straight out called illegal,

I will weigh in more after a few comments, and after work.
You can have a tuner as long as it does not cause excessive smoke. I could see stacks being OK if they didn't belch out a pile of smoke. 4" exhaust cannot be considered. 4" alone will not cause more smoke. Same with the stacks. They will just let you see the natural smoke more. Besides, 4" was standard from 2003 on.

They're looking for the heavy black smoke many guys like to produce to show off.

Alex, my truck smokes more than yours does. I have a tuner. It never smoked before the Smarty. But I was able to reduce some of it recently by lowering my rail pressure. Not sure if that is going to effect my fuel economy yet @power447 was getting his best economy where i have it now. I only see smoke under real heavy acceleration. It
s always been that way. I don't see any smoke stains on the body or rear bumper, or is it running out around the exhaust.

NJ law stated that you could emit smoke

    2003- 3500 RWD Automatic.

I am only relaying what was told to me by an officer. I have court today and will try to get a lot more information regarding it.
FYI I have a tuner on too, and i only haze lightly under heavy acceleration or when loaded.
Stock 2003 runs 3.5 in exhaust as we saw removing your and my old ones.

The law was written by someone driving a nissan leaf and doesn't understand stacks dont make smoke, its what is under the hood that does.

Not 100% true, but I do agree it's unfortunate that idiots thinking they were being cool got us to this point.

How vague these laws are can really lead to your day being ruined even if you are well intentioned and not purposefully 'rolling coal', but happen across the wrong officer
