    1987 Chevrolet Suburban 46" 6BT 12v Cummins SWAP

    Hello everyone!

I thought I make a thread here about my ride as I have many photos to share of it. I did not make the modifications on it but I bought it and have been finishing up few (many) loose ends in this endless project but this truck is modifited to drive in the snow here in Iceland. The idea is to go up to the glaciers in winter time or in really heavy snow action and get to float on top and hope not to drop down and get stuck.

Originally this is a old Police truck that was used from 1987 to about 1994

In 1994 this truck was sold and from what I know stored inside for about 17 years as there is no rust in it, somewhere from 1994 to 2011 some guys started to modify the truck for 44" tires but never finish it and in 2011 another guy bought it and finish the job for 46" and air suspension on four link at front and back. Painted it black and got it on license plates and inspection on it as proofed modify truck for streets here in Iceland.

Then there where 2 other owners from 2011 to 2013 that I don't know anything about but in 2013 the pre owner of me bought it, it had a 6,2L no turbo and was really slow and had a automatic transmission that broke down, he bought a DAF truck with this Cummins motor in it and made the engine swap.

Now I have started to work on electrical part of the car as well fixing the suspension as the rear four link was missing some strenght in it so I had to do small fix there and have few things to finish before I get full inspection on it but the plan is to have full inspection on it by the end of December.

Little about what is in the truck and few photos of it that I have.

    Spicer T5x2276 manual gear box
Dana 60 front and back with disk breaks (think it's from Ford F350) with no spin and 4.10 ration
Four link suspension system front and back with Firestone 1600kg air suspension

Looks like an excellent project! That Cummins engine will be very nice for crawling around in the snow and ice.

I installed a manual throttle in one of my old 4x4s. It made it very nice for crawling around rough terrain. I would pick the rpm I wanted to go and then just sit back and steer. Your Cummins should work even better than my old gasser with a manual throttle.

Looking forward to seeing more pics as your project moves forward. Good luck with your new mods!

was the lift in the origional plan or was it because it was required to clear the oil pan and driveshaft? or both?

The lift was original plan it was made before the motor swap, the old 6.2 was fine but no turbo and the automatic transmission was bad was over heating all the time, the previous owner wanted to get more power as well manual gear box so the end result was this Cummins motor from DAF with 5 speed manual gear box.
