Thread: 68RFE Trans Whining?

    68RFE Trans Whining?

Out of nowhere, I started hearing a whining sound when shifting into 4th gear, but it disappeared in 5th and 6th gears.

When downshifting from 5th to 4th, I didn’t notice the whine.

No codes, all gears seemed to shift just fine.

So I decided to drop the pan and take a look. I don’t smell burnt, but it doesn’t look right.

    I just rebuilt this 68RFE with Randy’s Stage 2 plug-and-play kit.

I also replaced the cooler with a Mishimoto one that has a thermostat bypass, so my temperature has been around 112-135, which is what’s been showing.

I noticed all this metal on the magnet.

I’ve only put 6k miles on the new trans.

Sounds like a second OH and see what failed.

Ensure that you have addressed the cooler system for contamination, or replace both coolers whenever you perform an OH to trans.

It appears to be a lubrication circuit failure at low pressure in the transmission internals.

    Planetary or thrust washer.

    Think 4th is 1:1 5th 1-od then 6th 2-od ratio.

I included diagram information in these transmissions so you can understand what you're working on in depth.

121 pages if you do not have the builder book.

It's unknown if you have a quality tuner, but here they offer the best tuning for Ram trucks.

I recommend applying for PLUS membership, which is free and provides a wealth of additional knowledge.

Cut the filers apart and see how widespread the metal is.

Always replace the coolers all at once when you overhaul these 68RFEs.

Only if you have a hot cooler flushing machine can you clean a pancake-style filter reasonably, but I replace mine!

Also, the radiator tank cooler/heater always!

Meatal is like sandpaper, so check the pump and VB valves for heavy scratches, etc.

    Complete tear down.

    Leave nothing to chance.

    Re: 68RFE Trans Whining?

    Thanks for the response.

I got my tune from being a lifetime member on the forum.

So I hope it’s not the tune.

I have only 5 thousand miles on the rebuilt transmission.

I don’t understand why failure at this little time.

My CVI number on 1st N-D UD was at 96, and that was pretty much from the get-go.

Everything I’ve read suggests that's way too much clearance.

The other CVI numbers seem to be alright.

I suppose I will purchase new overdrive and underdrive clutches.

I will have to call Randy's on Monday morning to see where I could get clutches and steel that will fit the Sonnax drum.

And what is the second cooler you are saying to replace?
