    2024 RAM 2500 6.7L - P0299 / P226C Codes?

    Hello,

First time poster & new to the Cummins platform here. Also am certainly not a diesel / auto tech, just a dude with 10mm sockets I haven't lost yet.

I'm having some DTC code issues & am hoping the tapping I'm hearing is just paranoia.

    Truck info:
2024 RAM 2500 HD Big Horn
    6.7L Cummins
    ~10,xxx miles
    *On its 2nd 68RFE transmission...

I recently installed the following mods:
    - Banks Monster Ram Intake
    - Banks Boost Tubes
    - Banks Big-*** Air Filter (oiled)
    - Banks PedalMonster
    - InsaneDiesel Bypass Filter (engine mount)

    Relevant DTCs:
    - P226C
    - P0299
    - (others, related to DPF system, dealer has advised non-problematic. Truck has run fine ~3 months now. DPM sensor on backorder.)

Mod installs went about as well as working in a gravel driveway can go. Everything torqued per spec as well as I could - intake / fuel rail & banjo / fuel lines / etc.

Did an oil & filter change before first start up. Added an extra QT or so for the bypass filter (~13.5QT total after topping off.)
    Fram 10w-30 Full Synthetic
    Fram Filter
(Will be doing Doc's next time!!)
((Wow the bypass filter fitting & boost tubes make oil filter changes a b&#%$!!))

After initial install, I warmed it up & took it for a spin. The truck was sluggish to accelerate so I was easy on throttle, and realized there were boost leaks. Had a boost leak on the cold side boost tube, and a leak on the EGR crossover to EGR inlet. This is when I got a check engine light.

Both have been corrected (visually, haven't performed smoke or pressure test.) Double checked plugs, clamps, and the connections between EGR and intake, intake and throttle body, intake and plate, and plugs in the Banks intake - all seem good (again, visually.)

After some more driving, the truck is still a bit lurchy and sluggish. I hear a distinct wooshing noise when the turbo boosts, and the truck was / is trying to constantly Regen (pending more testing.)

Confirmed with Banks TS that the air noise is to be expected, and doesn't sound like a boost leak. (Not high pitched or turbulent, but it's a bit louder than the turbo.)

Tested with OBDLink and AlfaOBD to check sensor readings and codes - and from what I can tell it looks OK... still have the codes but the last failed tests show ~40-50 miles prior. Oil pressure looks good - 41PSI while cruising

However, when revving in neutral, I can now hear a distinct tapping noise that scales with RPMs somewhat... fingers crossed it isn't lifters. Maybe I added too much oil thinking the bypass filter would need it? Something else? (Video)

My engine also now has a pretty jarring shutdown, shakes the truck a bit. (Video)

Video of acceleration with tapping noises, shutdown:

    P0299 Scan Info:
    Attachment 17841

    P226C Scan Info:
    Attachment 17842

    MAP, VGT Monitoring Info:
    Attachment 17840

DPF previously showed ~60-75% full, now down to 0% last I looked. Truck didn't attempt to Regen on the last few start / run attempts.

    Some questions on the above:
    - If the tapping might be lifters, should I drain a bit of oil off? Levels look OK on the dipstick.
    - What kind of tolerance / variance does the VGT allow for the turbo actuator response? I'm seeing +/- ~<1% here.
    - If EGR wasn't sealed properly & soot built up quickly, is it likely to resolve itself with some drive time? Reeeeallly hoping the EGR leak didn't cake up my turbo & require manual cleaning.
    - Those of you with Banks intakes - is the wooshing sound louder than the turbo whistle?
    - Do you think the DTCs might make a case to void the warranties? (Pending DPM sensor replacement)
    - Any general tips to avoid bricking my engine...

Thanks in advance if you've read this far! I'd greatly appreciate any possible help or advice on this!

Alright, so I'm an idiot and realized the Fram oil is junk.

I'll be doing another oil change today with Rotella T6 10W-30 Full Synthetic.

Here's hoping the oil change will alleviate some of the issues.

Refer to the attached troubleshooting guides for your specific trouble codes.

The hydraulic lifters on the 2019 models and up are known to be problematic.

Some folks are installing the Hamilton solid lifter conversion kit.

Ensure you are using genuine OEM oil filters and the correct type and weight of engine oil (see the attached service bulletin).

This will protect your warranty coverage.

    Thank you for your reply!

I'll change the engine oil (drain the pan and bypass filter) and the engine oil filter again.

I'm hoping the lifters are OK, as I haven't run/driven the engine much with the noise present, and it doesn't present when idle.

After I confirm whether or not it's drivable, I'll continue to monitor the DTCs, confirm whether they are still active, and proceed with the checks you provided.

Thanks again and have a great 4th!

    **UPDATE**

Oil change & filter have eliminated the lifter tapping.
    - Drained from the pan, let sit open for ~4 hours
    - Drained the bypass filter as much as possible
    - Installed new filter, pre-filled
    - Switched to Shell Rotella T6 10W-30, ~13QT
    - Ran idle for ~2 min, shut down & let cool for ~20 min
    - Checked dipstick, OK

    From a layman's perspective:

The test drive went well; the truck was responsive, and the built-in boost was fine.

VGT Monitoring looked good, again within

    Re: 2024 RAM 2500 6.7L - P0299 / P226C Codes?

    **UPDATE**

So, after a few days of driving the truck around - I have a couple issues persisting here.

    P226C code:
    VGT Actuator
    - VGT stays within 1% Commanded vs Actual for the most part
    - Some gauge recordings did show a ~1-3% discrepancy here and there with a couple points over 10% discrepancy, which were within milliseconds of a better reading
    - There are some instances where the VGT Commanded was 100% and the Actual was 99.094% -> 99.797%, and none with 100%/100%
*I'm guessing this would be the cause for the code, or not enough successful cycles yet to clear?
    - I recorded the actuator with key cycles - it's definitely moving & from what I can tell from other videos online, sounds comparable
    - Exhaust Brake works, building as high as 107hp

    YouTube Video:

    My Actuator (Video):
    https://i.imgur.com/NSLij8a.mp4

    P0299 code:
    - Turbo is building boost, the recorded range I have is:
    * .47 kPa (~0 PSI) (~9mph, 0% acceleration, no load)
    * 52.63 kPa (~7.63 PSI) (~48mph, ~41% acceleration, no load)

    - For the most part, boost seems fairly normal and does seem to build OK when accelerating heavily
    - During the last few starts, I've had some stuttering on low gear acceleration, where it feels like boost isn't building momentarily
    - I have checked all boost tube connections, EGR crossover, air intake, etc and all clamps and boots appear appropriately seated and tightened properly
    - No smoke test or pressure test yet

    YouTube Video:
    https://www.youtube.com/shorts/RbmCXFpG72c

    - I don't have a good video, but my cabin noise sounds the same as this does. (Faint extra wind noise panned left in the video's audio)
The noise comes from the driver's side

    P1451 code:
    - DEF nearing full, must've come on at some point during a test drive where it was building up quickly

    P24B4 code:
    - This is the code that the dealership advised was inert, but I'm suspecting could be part of the issue with the above codes
    - Waiting for DPM sensor, last I knew of it was on national back order
    - Truck has Regen'd abnormally during multiple drive tests, and the DPF gauge fluctuates a lot (not rapidly, but builds fast and comes back down with a little harder driving)
    - Most recently, drove the truck normally and it built soot incrementally to about 50% with no Regen. I drove it a little harder and it kept the gauge at around <50%

So, a few questions of course...

    1. Should my next step be reaching out to the dealer for a status on the DPM sensor, and trying to get it in as-is with codes? Or try to keep driving it to clear codes?
    2. Should I consider having the turbo cleaned & actuator calibrated professionally? I don't have a means of lifting the truck up securely at the moment.
    3. Should I be concerned with damage if I keep driving it as-is?

Thanks again for any help / info on this!

    Re: 2024 RAM 2500 6.7L - P0299 / P226C Codes?

I would press the dealership for the ETA on the DPM filter sensor.

The P0299 code is typically associated with the turbocharger, but it could also be related to the actuator (see attached).

The dealership needs to address these issues under warranty.
