No Start - Not Connected To ECM?

So, on my way to work the other morning, I had a rat.

Yes, a Rat pops out of one of the vents on the dash.

Damn, this is such a long story.

    So, the rodent showed itself.

I tried pulling over and grabbing it but had no luck.

It seems this fury turd has been noshing on some of my wires.

    My pillar gauges stopped working.

I found his nest in my glovebox and tried setting traps, only to have him chew or pull his tail off.

I'm not sure if it is still in the truck or not.

Now, I got the truck home yesterday without issues.

This morning, I went out to start it, and it acts like it's bricked.

I added a charger to the batteries, but nothing came out.

The voltage is 13v, so the batteries are disconnected for an hour.

I took the batteries to the auto store that I got them from last year.

They checked well on the load test.

My MM3 will not show the ECM or DTC.

Stero is asking for a security code.

I am at a loss and about ready to have this thing towed to a repair shop.

    Do you have any thoughts?

Dang, I hate to hear this.

I had a rat in my truck.

I put those sticky pads with a little peanut butter in the middle and caught Mom, Dad, and all the kids, LOL.

Unfortunately, you will probably have to disassemble the whole dash and check every wire and harness.

Let us know what you find out

As stated above the rat has most likely chewed through some wires.

You will need to follow the wiring harness under the dash and inside the cab and engine compartment to look for any damage.

Sounds like some of the CAN wires (twisted pairs) have been compromised as you are unable to talk to the PCM.

To check the CAN C disconnect the batteries and Ohm across pins 6 and 14 at the OBDII port.

You should measure 60 Ohms if the circuit is in tact.

the resistance across pins 3 and 11 for the CAN IHS it should be 60 Ohms also.

The only good rat….is a DEAD rat! Uncle Gus and lots of peppermint/spearmint oils, seems to do it for me. I also put traps at every wheel and leave hood open with a trouble light hanging. Seems to work in my shop. I use tons of bait stations on outside perimeter of buildings. That said, I would love for wire manufacturers to figure out how to make wire insulation that mice and rats would not like to chew, instead of the soy based crap they are using.

Re: No Start - Not Connected To ECM?

I spent the day digging under the console and the exterior.

I found a few spots he had chewed, one of the wires coming from the steering column into a harness and various spots under the hood.

I can't find any blown fuses.

When I turn the key on, it shows service ABS, airbags, and low voltage battery (even though the batteries indicate 13+ volts and are on a charger).

The gear indicator will not light up and will show the truck that it is in the park.

    I am at a loss.

I am contacting insurance and will have it towed to a repair shop in the morning.

Sounds like you may have some open power wires somewhere in the harness, along with some open CAN wires.

Taking it to a shop is an option.

Hopefully, your insurance company will cover the cost of repairs.

Ask the shop if they will wrap the damaged areas with rodent tape after repair.

    Please keep us posted.

The shop had to rewire the can bus and several wires coming from the ignition.

Only charged a few hours of labor and got me back on the road.
