1st Gen Fair Market Value In 2025?

Hi, I have a 2022 Cummins 2500, but I am considering looking at a 1st Gen truck as a weekend/spare driver for when my truck is broken.

What's a fair value range for a 92 W250 club cab 8ft bed, light engine mods, automatic 47RH that was recently rebuilt, ~190k miles, basically rrust-free in the northeast?

I know values are substantially higher than they were a few years ago, and pre-COVID, it wouldn't have been a very valuable truck.

    Rust-free in the northeast.

    That's a paradox!

Depending on the actual condition, I would guess between 15K and 40K.

Basically it’s worth what someone is willing to pay.

I went to see the truck, and it was pretty clean. Very little surface rust and absolutely no real rot. It drove well but there were two problems.

    1. The brake pedal was pretty spongy and you had to press it to the floor to get any braking power. Once you got to the engagement point, it did brake fine. The owner claimed that it was easy to adjust and you just had to turn an adjuster on the rear drums to bring the shoes closer to the braking surface. You could see the front pads and rotors were good. This seems reasonable but like anything you have to wonder why he didn't do it.

    2. Oil leaks. The engine leaked more oil than I would have liked to see. After driving it and letting it sit for 10 minutes there was 2 or 3 drops of oil under the truck. Looks like it's coming from the front of the engine more so than the back. I know pretty much all old diesels leak some oil, but not sure if this is excessive. Does excess crankcase pressure (blowby cause more oil to be pushed out?

I didn't get a chance to check blow-by by lifting the oil cap because we didn't have anything to block the fan. The radiator had been replaced with a more modern unit, but I unfortunately didn't look at the coolant to see if has any signs of fuel in it from head gasket damage.

The engine has a pretty big turbo on it, looks like a HX50, it's about the size ive seen on marine 6CTA's. (I did not pull the intake and check for turbo shaft play, thats one other thing I should do) The trans was recently rebuilt and shifts well. The exhaust is larger diameter than stock but routed like stock, no crazy stacks, hood/fender dumps.

I gave the guy $200 deposit to hold the truck, going to go back this week and check on the above items. If any are bad I will probably forfeit the 200 but that's ok - cheaper than rebuilding the engine and the truck seems definitely worth it if all checks out. Anything else that I should really take a closer look at before going thru with it? I was so focused on looking for rust I guess I wasn't as thorough with the drivetrain as I should have been.

Excessive crankcase pressure would increase the oil leaks.

Could be the front crankshaft seal.

Hopefully, they addressed any rear main seal issues when the transmission was out.

I would ask him how long he has owned it and if he has any maintenance records, history, or receipts to share.

Maybe worth taking a coolant combustion test kit with you to check for any signs of head gasket issues.

It would have been beneficial if you could have taken an oil sample for analysis.

Just my thoughts, hopefully helpful and others will chime in.

    What was the asking price?

    Age of the owner?

How long did they own it?

    Why selling?

    And everything @Akbob said.

    I bought it.

    Seems reasonably well sorted.

It passed the blowby test, combustion gasses in coolant test, and turbo shaft play test.

The brakes still need adjusting, and it seems like someone geared the truck for larger tires (speedometer reads pretty high compared to true speed).

Someone local is selling some wheels with 35's (it currently has 32's) which I might go pick up and sell these wheels.

It has plenty of power but seems like it really has to rev out to go anywhere due to the gearing.

    Congratulations!

Looks to be in good shape from the picture and your description.

    Dude, that thing is sweet.

I personally love the older rigs.

Mainly because I can't afford a new one.

The extended cabs seem to be harder and harder to find.

Run her, tell she blows, then add oil and still run her while she's still blown!
