Thread: Turbo Actuator Desired?

    Turbo Actuator Desired?

Hey guys, I have a strange one for you.

A buddy of mine was driving his truck home last night.

He shut it off in the drive-through and went to start it back up, but there was nothing.

Initially, there was no power, but he cycled the key several times.

Then, the truck fired up but died immediately.

He got it fired up after that and running, but now his actuator stays at 0% actual and 5% desired.

It pours smoke but idles and runs normally.

Could this be a failed VGT?

No matter the throttle input, it will not desire more than 5%.

Thanks in advance for any input.

It's a tough one, for sure.

I would first suggest a full system scan of all modules for trouble codes.

Hopefully, this will provide some clues and help narrow down the cause.

The next step would be to look at live data for any abnormalities.

The ECM may not get the correct information from the MAP or MAF sensors, but it could be due to an electrical issue.

    Please keep us posted.

    That sounds good.

I didn't even think about either sensor causing an issue.

I also told him to get his batteries tested at home or load-test them because the truck is a 17, and he believes they are factory-tested.

    Re: Turbo Actuator Desired?

So quick update it appears to be an actuator and / or turbo.

Both shops he called who I know are good guys recommended a fleece cheetah drop-in, and they did not recommend only changing one or the other but as a pair.

As far as the truck is not turning on I’m not sure what was going on there, but he is running a RaceME Ultra with some OG tunes from the big guy himself.

So he should be able to get some sort of DTCs.

He didn’t seem to be thrilled about the bill, so we will most likely be doing the job ourselves.

Who knows though maybe I can sell him my turbo and upgrade myself to a 2nd Gen swap LOL.

Can't go wrong with the 2G swap.

I had the Cheetah, and it performed well.
