Thread: Vibration 70 MPH?

    Vibration 70 MPH?

The truck has vibration starting around 70mph.

Over the past few years, it has come and gone; it isn’t consistent, meaning you will feel it, and then it will smooth out.

Mostly feel it for it your butt; however, sometimes it will be in the steering wheel.

It's almost as if a wheel is unbalanced.

Most driving is 65mph and less, so you don’t notice it.

I am searching for some suggestions on what to check for.

Get the truck in the air.

Check each tire from 12 to 6 for play, as well as 3 to 9.

Check the u-joints for the driveline for slop or damage.

As you mentioned, look for missing wheel weights on each tire and tread wear.

    Re: Vibration 70 MPH?

I chased an issue like this with my 2015 3500 DRW for a few months.

I replaced shocks and u-joints and had tires trued at a commercial truck shop; nothing helped!

I checked the driveshaft runout with a dial indicator and found the problem.

I ordered a shaft from a shop in the San Antonio, TX, area, and it's now as smooth as butter.

    Tires.
    Wheels.
    Driveshaft U-Joints.
    Axle U-Joints.
    Driveshaft out of balance.
    Wheel bearings.

    Re: Vibration 70 MPH?

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I will get the truck in the air this week and report back.

I'm hoping it’s something with the wheels and not the driveshaft.

    Re: Vibration 70 MPH?

I have got some time with the truck for the last few days.

As far as I could tell (with my limited experience), U-joints on axles and drive shafts didn't have any play.

The only thing I saw was a very small amount of movement on the front passenger tire when moved 12-6.

More or less a click and very small amount of movement.

Ended up rotating tires front-back and back-front on both sides.

Will test drive tomorrow and see if it makes any difference.

When I got new tires years ago is when it started to feel different, however recently it was has become very noticeable.

Tech at the tire Shop did say that one wheel was slightly out of "true?"

    Thanks for the update.

I believe he's referring to the alignment or wear on that tire.

Little amounts of play will cause erratic movements or sounds.

    Re: Vibration 70 MPH?

I forgot to report on tire wear.

No tires stood out as having uneven tire wear.

They are stock-size Continental terrain contact with about 50k on them.

    Re: Vibration 70 MPH?

Quick update: I rotated the tires. I have been driving for about two weeks and haven't felt a vibration.

I even aired some in back to tow, and all is still good.
