    Exhaust Brake Issue?

    Hi everyone.

I have a problem with the exhaust brake on my 2015 2500 with 140,000 completely stock running MM3 tuner bought from diesel race kits with their tune.

I’m guessing that would be called a box tune anyway today.

The exhaust brake would not disengage.

The truck went into limp mode and made a Weird ticking noise, almost like a motor tap, with black smoke everywhere.

I pulled over immediately and shut the truck off.

Everything returned to normal; I got where I was going, no problem, 1 hour later.

I started the truck again, and it was fine.

No lights came on the dash, either.

    Can anyone help me?

So, no CEL or trouble codes, correct?

Boxed tunes are known to cause all kinds of issues.

How many miles since it was tuned, and did the exhaust brake trouble start immediately or soon after tuning?

If the truck is running fine now, I will set up your MM3 to monitor the fuel rail pressure actual and desired and the VGT position actual and desired.

The next time it acts up, pay close attention to the MM3 to determine if the issue is fuel or turbo-related.

Your problem could be associated with tuning, turbo, or FCA.

    Exhaust Brake Issue?

    Hi, thank you.

I'm not sure what you mean about Cel, but no lights popped up, and I’ve had the tune in the truck for about 40,000 miles, so it’s been on there a while.

This is the first issue I have had had had hadn’t turned the EB back on to see if it does it again.

CEL (Check Engine Light). Sounds like we can rule out tuning and trouble codes.

I recommend setting up your MM3 to monitor as described in my previous post to see if we can narrow it down the next time it happens.

Usually, there are trouble codes associated with a turbo issue, so that it could be a sticking FCA (Fuel Control Actuator).

It’s possible your turbo actuator is acting up, or the vanes in the turbo itself are stuck/sooted up, causing the exhaust brake to stay on as you described.

The actuator could not move the vanes in the turbo to the desired positions, which could be the clicking sound you heard of the gears in the actuator clicking against each other.

Very strange, no codes or CELs have popped up?

I’m not a turbo mechanic, but it makes logical sense.

Hopefully, others who are more versed in turbos can chime in.

    Also, box tunes are garbage.

It would be best to find a tuner that can build custom tuning.

I would monitor the actual/desired on your MM3 to see what the vanes are doing.

AK Bob also gave some excellent advice to keep a watchful eye on.

Please keep us informed of what you find out.
