I pulled the actuator and found a component had gotten hot enough to desolder itself and slide down, then the backing solder cooled and stuck it in place. The two main pins were no longer connected.

I resoldered them, but that made no difference.

With the actuator reconnected and the key on the motor didn't move or cycle, it still had a commloss code.

Upon more inspection of the actuator board, I pulled it to discover the motor windings were cooked on the lower side.

I could not find other examples of City Diesel actuators failing, which surprised me.

After talking to City Diesel, they have changed the design from 3 years ago when I got this one.

He said it now limits the current at a lower level and modifies the gears in the gear section.

So now I'm waiting for City Diesel to call me when a unit becomes available.

I was told about two weeks.

So, a few days of troubleshooting and now it's another 1k for a new actuator.

At least the turbo is still good!
Mine failed a year after I replaced it.

I just upgraded the turbo after that, but I still have the city diesel actuator in my toolbox. I'm inspired to take it apart now.

I'd be interested to see what yours looks like inside.

I haven't found any examples of the City Diesel actuator itself failing aside from mine and now yours. LOL!

There are no visible issues I can see.

    Electronics work, won't drive.

The gear that mates with the turbo side won't budge, but when taken apart, everything moves freely.

I think I'll send it to City Diesel and see if they can repair it so I'll have a spare.

It looks like the motor failed. I know mine didn't have that black spot on the board near the gear on the board.

If the gear housing moves freely, the motor must be locked up.

The 3 torx screws below the board are what hold the motor in the board in place aside from the 4 torx on the board.

I finally got my new City Diesel actuator and put it on last Friday.

    It's back to good now!
