    2017 RAM 68RFE Chatter Noise?

Okay so I had a weird scenario last night.

I took off from a stop nothing too crazy just cruising got to about 4th gear and coasted for a second due to traffic and then I heard this very loud clatter noise.

I thought it was another vehicle but come to find out it was mine.

So I turn off and pull into the local target. Still driving mind you under power.

The sound reminded me of a rocker arm that comes loose and chatters to high heavens.

But no all was quiet in the engine bay but when I got under the truck it was coming right from the flex plate torque converter area.

It would only stop if I put the truck in gear with my foot on the brake.

But if I rev the motor slightly it went up and down with rpm.

Again topside in the engine compartment all was well but ear to the torque converter is where the crazy loud sound was coming from.

I had it towed home and shut it was fairly quickly after doing the quick search to find the sound.

Now I took the dust cover off and don’t see much out of place when I inspect the fly wheel, and torque converter bolts. But could I be missing something?

The trans is stock with a hair under 90k and the truck is on a weight loss but I am not hot ridding the truck.

I would say I’m easy on it.

    Any insight would be awesome!

I was wondering if the flex plate is possibly cracked.

Hopefully, others with more 68RFE experience will chime in.

Yeah, I am wondering the same thing.

I might have to bite the bullet and drop the trans to see.

I’m trying to see what the opinions are before I dig in.

Maybe save me a headache or two.

Maybe take a look using a cheap, flexible scope?

I, myself, am tired of dropping trannies this year.

    That is a good idea.

I believe the flex plate bolts are 100 ft-lbs.

I had the same scenario happen.

Long story short, I had loose bolts on the flex plate, tightened them all up, and the horrible sound was eliminated.

I even ordered an ATS billet plate for safety measures, but it was not needed for the fix.

Excellent link that is super useful!

The noise is horrible, so I did not run it long before I shut it off.

I had a similar noise on my big block Chevy, but that ripped the rocker arm stud out of the aluminum head, LOL.

Hopefully, it’s similar to your situation!

Re: 2017 RAM 68RFE Chatter Noise?

Alright, everyone, I have a bit of an update.

So, I dropped the truck off at the local trusted diesel shop.

Because it's been bad weather here, and my truck does not fit in the garage

Go figure, but I noticed something weird when loading the truck onto the trailer.

When backing out of my driveway, all seemed fine until I waited for a car to pass.

I continued backing up, and it's like I got a neutral gear for reverse.

It's not good, but I don't know if this could be related to the original flex plate/ possible torque converter issue or what; I'm puzzled.

I did just quickly fire the truck up and put it in reverse reasonably fast, but I don't see that being an issue.

The shop it's at now said it may be a hurt trans, but I'm not too sure.

They will get to it most likely on Monday due to the holiday.

They will run some diagnostics and good stuff before they do anything and let me know.

If the trans needs some rebuilding and I need trans tuning, is it worth using my RaceMe tuners box trans tune?

Or if I can get trans-tuned another way (I'll leave it at that), would the truck being on a RaceME box tune affect the trans-tuning?

I could just be paranoid, but I'm planning for the worst.
