The welder should advise and have access to the gusset material required.
Just tell him you want it repaired and beefed up.

And that's fair; I know so little about welding that I don't even know what to tell the guy.
I wasn't sure if it needed a particular grade of steel, metal, or something else.
I've had other welding work done, but not welding work that was so critical in terms of safety, so I wanted to make sure that I didn't say or didn't say anything relevant.
Hey, the only dumb question is a question not asked!
Better to be safe than sorry.

Given that, a question for myself is, what would a typical gusset be for this repair?
I've seen my guy use a gusset to reinforce a trailer tongue, but I'm not sure if that's the same thing I should expect on this.
The guy referred to me quoted me a $150 trip fee and $95 for an estimated hour of labor, so it's reasonable, considering my average guy charges a $300 trip fee, LOL.
Here is the work the welder did.

Not very pretty, and he didn’t add any gussets to beef it up.
The lower weld, where the most significant crack was, looks better than the upper weld.
Surprised he didn’t grind off the old weld and lay a nicer-looking bead.
Hopefully, he got good penetration, and it will hold up okay.
I would take a wire wheel and clean it up, then apply some paint for corrosion control.
Curious about what others think about the quality of work.

I agree with you, Bob; it's not very pretty, but the welder could have added some gussets, ground the welds, and applied paint.
Hopefully, the welder cleaned the area well before he started.

I wouldn't have let him leave without two broken kneecaps.
This is a safety concern, as this welder was only focused on a dollar sign.
I would do precisely what is suggested above.
Where was he grounded?
The bottom weld looks better than the top; he ran too hot.
Please don't take my words as a bad criticism towards you by any means, but I would ask for a repass to be done.

He said there wasn't anything really to "beef up."
He said he ground the old welds away and laid three beads on the lower one, which got rotted all through.
