3rd Gen Dodge RAM Lower Shock Absorber Bolt/Nut?

Well, I found the metallic rattle that's been driving me bonkers.

I changed one shock absorber and went to do the passenger side to find the lower shock bolt loose.

Thought, "Great, there's my problem; just lose"

I began whizzing it out with the impact, and it kept spinning.

Lying under the truck in frustration, I saw.

The 7/8" spanner just keeps spinning off the nut.

Is it 20 or 21mm? Are there any tips on getting the damned thing out?

The shock is condemned because of the new shock on the other side, and I'm awaiting the *improved* part.

Any ideas on how I can remove it?

I can't sneak a socket in, and all my spanners are offset so that they won't slip over the top.

Do any of you guys have a technique?

    You cannot get at it.

You can't sneak a socket down from the shock side or slide a spanner down from above, either.

You can about sneak an 8mm thick spanner through the bottom.

Even that is an offset; you can only get a minimal grip on it.

Aren't they supposed to have a captured flag on them so you dont have to use a wrench?

Maybe a small tack weld on a nut to the bracket.

I couldn't get a tack welder near where the nut broke off.

It was a month of spending on the truck anyway, as the steering box didn't want to keep fluid in and shat itself.

But in any case, I dropped an open-ended spanner down the shock and got it to "just" catch on the face of the nut 21mm.

I backed it out, extracted the old shock (the pair were fine), and ordered a Mopar flag nut.

Job done in a few hours.

A clatter-free ride; however, I think the rattling may have damaged the bolt slightly.

I may replace it in the future.

    Onto replacing the steering box!

Thanks for the update, and glad you got those replaced.

I am looking forward to hearing how the steering box goes.

If I could suggest a steering box, go with the 6-bolt Redhead steering box.

    Worth every penny.

No play whatsoever, of course; other things like ball joints, tie rod ends, and bushings also have a factor.

    You'll be pleased.

Typical, I do one side, and the other side begins clattering!

    Another flag nut was ordered.

I intend on changing the bolts, too, and putting a flag nut into my stock pool.

The bolt on the initial rattle had some rash from movement.

Strangely, I checked the bolts about a wheel later and could get at least a half-turn on the bolt.

On the driver's side, that clattering could be me breaking the weld on that captive nut.

    Good job.

I cleaned the bolts and copper-snotted it up, "ready for the next guy."

    Me! Huh!
