    Towing For The First Time?

    Hey everyone, newbie question here.

So I want to pull a wake boat about 30 miles, nothing too long of a haul.

The boat with the trailer is about 8400 lbs.

This may be a dumb question; however, I have yet to haul with this truck.

I have towed smaller car trailers before with gassers, but never my RAM, as it’s newer to me.

So my truck has a weight loss kit, 4in straight pipe, Banks RAM air, S&B cold air intake, and is on 35s with stock gearing.

What would you guys recommend I do to toe with this thing?

I know I should take it out of the 120hp tune, lower it, and put the truck into haul mode.

Would anyone recommend I tow in a certain way, or anything I must do as a precaution?

I’m just trying to be as nice on my stock 68RFE with 86k miles as possible.

    Thank you, guys, in advance!

It sounds like you nailed it.

30HP and turn on the tow haul mode.

Keep an eye on your EGTs, and you should be fine.

So here is my only issue.

I do not have an EGT probe yet.

Should I change how I drive due to that issue, and I’m in tow haul mode?

Do I need to set a gear lock or something of that nature, or is it as simple as pushing the tow haul button and rock?

If you haven’t already done so, a thermal bypass valve will help lower your transmission temperatures.

Are you pulling a lot of hills?

If so, I would lock out to a lower gear.

That is honestly coming very soon!

I’ve just been waiting for the weather to get nicer, and now is the time, LOL!

A lot of it is just Illinois' flat back roads.

Going to guess you have 3.42s with the bigger tires.

I’d push tow-haul and lockout 6th and not worry about that weight on the lower tune.

Don’t overthink it; it’s what the truck is built for; you're not pushing the limits.

    Have fun and enjoy it!

Yeah, you’re right; they are the 3.42s.

I’m sure it will tow just fine it’s just one of those things that, until I do it, I have a million questions!

    I appreciate the help!

    Not a problem!

My truck has 3.42 and 35s.

Last weekend hooked the gooseneck up and loaded a tractor, and drilled all in, guessing around 13k.

I make sure it stays out of 6th with those gears and tires.
