Thread: 2017 RAM 6.7L Cummins VGT Failing?

2017 RAM 6.7L Cummins VGT Failing?

    My VGT stopped working today.

It's stuck at 49%, according to my MM3.

I read that deleting will cause the VGT to seize up prematurely.

Should I replace the existing turbo or switch to something else?

If I do swap, to what?

I pull 10k-16k pretty regularly and haul the family and groceries often.

Coincidentally I just received Banks Monster Ram and downpipes.

If I swap to something else, I'm guessing a retune is in order.

If I change like for like, does new intake and downpipes alone necessitate a retune?

What code is it throwing, and how many miles does the truck have?

Depending on budget, you've got several options, but it may be simple as the actuator must be replaced.

Review our DIY actuator guide, and let me know if you have any questions.

2017 RAM 6.7L Cummins VGT Failing?

I'll check the wires shortly, check the resistance on the actuator, and report back.

    Thank you!

2017 RAM 6.7L Cummins VGT Failing?

I pulled the plug and checked the resistance, and both were right around 120, right in spec.

Everything looked ok on the surface, with nothing standing out.

I plugged back in and drove to the store 20 min up the road.

It worked perfectly as it should for 15 min, then stopped at 49.9%, but no codes.

I unplugged in the parking lot, plugged back in, and headed home.

I worked for about 5 min and then threw the two original codes plus U0101.

I hope it's in the plug, wiring, or actuator terminals.

When the actuator starts to fail, does it work ok cold and then get goofy once it gets hot?

    Suggestions on the next steps?

The engine bay is hot right now,w so there's not much I can do now.

Thanks for the help on this.

I appreciate it! I assumed the turbo was toast and would have ripped it out.

Since your wiring is in spec, I feel comfortable (though I can't guarantee) with those codes and miles that it's your actuator.

If you have considered upgrading your turbo, now is the time.

DIY tip #342, if you decide to tear into it, don't pull the actuator off without draining some coolant first.

2017 RAM 6.7L Cummins VGT Failing?

    Update.

The truck cooled off a bit, and without touching any of the wiring, I cleared the codes and fired it up, and VGT appears to be working.

I’m assuming once it gets hot, it goes haywire.

I’ll try it one more time this evening to confirm that’s exactly what’s going on.

Any suggestions on deciding on a turbo upgrade?

A quick search shows that an actuator will run me 800-1600.

    And a new turbo 2k-3500?

    Swap actuator?

Stick with VGT or swap out to fix?

Will another VGT do the same thing in 80k-100k miles?

    Is that the normal lifespan?
