Service 4WD Light And Clicking Sound?

Today, I went for a trail drive, and about 25 miles in, I heard a clicking while driving somewhere in the front of the truck (I had to guess T case or front drive shaft).

After hearing, I switched it back to 2wd, and it went away, then back to 4wd, and the sound came back then to 4wd low, and the sound was a faster pace back to 4wd high and sound slowed down and finally to 2wd where it went away again.

Shortly after, my "Service 4wd" light came on.

I stopped, had lunch, then started the truck, and it was off again.

When the truck made this sound, the 4wd was working both high and low.

Also, I heard the noise for the first time last summer when switching my truck to 4wd to pull the boat up the ramp.

I figured maybe it wasn't engaged all the way, so once I got up the ramp, I switched it back to 2wd, and it didn't want to change.

I had to back up and forward and put in neutral to take it out of 4wd high.

I hadn't used the 4wd since then until today.

    Any ideas or thoughts?

My front drive shaft CV Joint boot is torn, and grease leaked.

I thought the front drive shaft always spins 2wd and 4wd.

    Thanks.

On the fourth Gens, the front driveshaft is only rotated when in 4WD.

Your CV joint with the split boot is probably worn.

Check for trouble codes on your service 4WD light.

If you have wheel speed sensor faults, you may have a wheel hub bearing going out.

You may also have a front actuator issue in your description of difficulty shifting in and out of 4WD.

Thanks for the reply; I thought the CV was what was clicking, but the speed of the clicking changed at the exact mph while in low range; maybe I think it's the T-case making the noise.

    The theory is 5 mph if it's 2wd, 4wd, or 4wd low.

The axle shafts, hubs, and drive shaft continuously spin the same 5rpm regardless of the t-case selection.

I just realized Im still under 100k for my powertrain warranty.

I read the warranty, which should cover it, but I lifted and deleted it.

Therefore, I try to avoid the dealer.

The dealer will replace the front driveshaft under the powertrain warranty tomorrow.

    Hopefully, that fixes it.

Well, after three rescheduled appointments, I finally got my driveshaft replaced.

The clicking noise disappeared, so I guess that's all it was.

The tech recommended a drive shaft spaced to help with the full droop with my lift.

Has anyone used one of these?

Did your kit come with a t case drop bracket to help level the pitch of the shaft?

I think that is where the issue is generated and puts an unwanted load on the joints.

Unless your drive shaft was bent?
