Well, good news is that it was the u-joint.

Bad news is that the old u-joint was in there so good that I ended up bending the mounting hole on the axle to where the retaining clip would not fit in place to hold the new u-joint in.

So I ended up spending $400 and just replaced the entire axle joint and stub shaft

Did you bend the yoke ear with hand tools or were you using a hydraulic press?

I bent the yoke ear with a u-joint removal tool. I had the receiver cup on the ear, spring clip removed, and was still unable to press the joint out through the ear with the impact that I had.

It was so stuck that I bent the receiver cup probably to the point of being unusable, and the yoke ear.

I had to take an Uber to my ex's house where I have my 20 ton press.

I was able to finally get the job done with it, but at the end of the evening I realize that I had bent the ear, and the spring clips did not seat properly in each side of the u-joint
