    BD Protect 68RFE Kit Advice

I want to start by saying I know people's opinions on this kit.

I will install it while figuring out what to do regarding the valve body and transmission internals.

Probably going with Revmax, but I want to do some more research.

I’m still in the process of learning all this transmission stuff.

I’m aware DRD trans tuning is supposed to increase line pressure to 250 psi (correct me if I’m mistaken).

On my MM3, the desired line pressure never exceeds 170 psi.

Any help is understanding how this transmission functions is appreciated.

I like to tinker with my truck and learn about it as I go, so I’m looking forward to learning more complex stuff about the 68RFE.

In the meantime, I’ll do this Protect68 kit, which requires trans tuning, which I have from DRD.

However, I’m wondering if the tunes I got from him (which are for my bone stock 68RFE) will be sufficient.?

Or should I have a retune because I’m changing a flow path in the valve body?

I understand that the tune for the stock 68RFE doesn’t increase the line pressure.

A valve body capable of supporting the higher line pressure must be installed along with a retune to create the higher pressure.

Hopefully, others with more experience on the 68RFE will chime in and confirm.

A retune is needed when changing up the valve body.

If I were you, I’d save up for the Revmax billet zero flex valve body or Randy’s baby maker valve body.

Increasing line pressure helps a lot, but having a stock valve body with stock accumulator pistons and a 225-250 psi back plate isn’t good.

Not to mention you have a potentiometer for warping and cross leaks.

Do yourself a favor and go with a Revmax or Randy baby maker.

I just installed the Revmax billet valve body and updated tunes from DRD, but I am still in the relearning process.

I need a few more miles on it before I can get on it.

I have seen a max trans pressure at 250 on the MM3.

It has been tough to keep it around 30% throttle, but I am almost through it.

I can give you an update shortly once I get through 100 miles.

You installed the billet valve body with stock internals?

I considered that but was worried a new valve body would damage the clutches or input shaft, so I wanted to try the BD protect kit while waiting for a complete rebuild.

Looking forward to your update @BrentM

I've been running the older version of this kit and an otherwise stock transmission with DRD tuning increasing line pressure for a few years now.

    So far, so good.

I never change from the lowest HP level tune, though.

For me, the truck has more than enough power as is.

Why tempt fate with these transmissions?

The billet valve body won’t hurt an otherwise stock transmission.

The BD protect kit is not the best option for upping line pressure on the transmission, but if you are doing it for preventative measures and not having issues with the transmission, it will work just fine.

Re: BD Protect 68RFE Kit Advice

Trust "LIFT89" on what they said.

I thought I did the right thing in getting the BD Protect68 by allowing me to increase the line pressure using DRD tuning (which is excellent, by the way).

Well, after about 7,000 miles of having the Protect68 installed, my 68RFE transmission (without any issues prior) went out.

I am a very responsible driver and run the 30hp tune.

    I have 295/65/20 with 3.73 gears.

My truck had just over 60K miles on it when this happened and only had the 35" diameter tires on it for 6000 miles.

I had to fork out a lot of dough to replace my transmission with a new one.

I would avoid it since 250 PSI is way too high without additional modifications or seriously upgrading your VB.

You most likely will end up damaging the internals otherwise.

Good luck with your setup, and don't waste your money as I did.

    Cheers.
