    Killer Dowel Pin?

OK, I am sure this has been beaten to death.

I am doing research for a pal. I know he has an 02, but he said it doesn't apply; it was only 12 valve; I say it did.

He bought a new 165K now but never touched or modified it.

He heard a loud banging about 3 yrs ago after a few start-ups and has been fine ever since.

No oil leaks, so there is no broken cover.

I think his pin fell out and migrated semi-safely to the bottom somewhere.

    Did you have the issue?

How many miles is your 24V?

Did anyone lose the pin with no damage?

    Killer Dowel Pin?

Early 24valves had "killer dowel pin" issues until 2002.

It happened a lot more to 12valve than 24valve, though.

I've seen a few where the pin made its way into the pan and didn't damage anything, but I have seen more that either broke the timing gear case, the cam gear, or both.

It likely broke a piece off the timing case if he heard a loud bang.

It's funny because I put the bug in him, and he has been thinking about it ever since.

He woke up at 3 AM; he told me about 3 yrs back, he had a loud bang, I told him to settle down; if it was three years ago, it's done and safely in the pan, probably.

He is taking it apart to inspect.

Funny, he told me the miles on his truck, i.e., 135K (165K now).

I said your auto tranny is on borrowed time.

A year later, it went out.
