    Coolant Drain Petcock?

    Hey friends.

For anyone who has direct experience draining coolant through the radiator drain petcock on the newer trucks (the one that takes an Allen to turn), did a simple 1/2 turn do the trick, or did you also have to pull the plug outward while turning?

Did the ramp groove design in the plug handle the axial movement, or did you have to help it out by pulling?

It’s much easier and faster draining to just pop the bottom radiator hose off imo.

On my 2017, I used a crescent wrench to loosen and tighten it; the outside is a hex shape too.

It does come out as it loosens.

Did you access it from the passenger wheel well?

An interesting option to think about.

Looks like you accessed it by pulling the fender liner too.

Seems easier than from up top.

Yes, but it is on the driver's side.

Access from the top or bottom is nearly impossible on my truck.

This is what the service manual says to do.

Wheel well is the best option.

Dang near impossible from the top or bottom.

I modified a 17mm socket and accessed the petcock from the top.

Rotated 1/2 turn and didn’t need to pull the plug outwards.

On my 2012, that plug is out in the wide open.

I've drained coolant several times to swap and change the turbo.

I just loosened it, and it drained out.

It is a little slower, but it drained it just fine.
