Thread: Noise In Motor?

    Noise In Motor?

I've been doing some research, but I can't track down what I'm looking for.

I have this very distinct ping that I can't get rid of.

I did a valve lash this weekend to ensure everything was in the spec; a few were out, so I adjusted them, and it seemed to quiet down the top end quite a bit.

I also did a number 6 injector swap because it went bad from a fuel knock, I heard.

But this ping I can't seem to get rid of I will try to upload a video with the sound.

Fluids have always been changed early as well.

Thank you for any help you can give.

    Noise In Motor?

What specs did you use on the valve lash?

From what I've seen, that ping comes from one being just a hair on the loose side of specs.

I set them tight at .008 and .018; it's gotten rid of that ping on the ones I've done.

To be honest sounds like a Cummins to me; of course, my hearing isn’t what it used to be, having sirens blasting in my ears over the years.

It does sound a little tinny, if that makes sense, LOL.

    Re: Noise In Motor?

I set the lash at the recommended spec of .10 intake and .26 exhaust.

It's done the pinging for a while now, no matter what I do, but the harder-to-hear scrape/tick type is newer.

I'm also trying to determine if it could be coming from a pulley or something, but the ping would be nice to get rid of.

No exhaust leaks that I know of.

I've replaced all the manifold gaskets and cooler plate gaskets.

If your FCA is going bad you would be experiencing other symptoms like hesitation, sag, and stumble.

You can verify the operation of the FCA by graphing and comparing the actual and desired fuel rail pressures.

Personally, I have never heard of the FCA causing any pinging sounds at idle.

I listened to your video again, and it didn’t sound like anything that I would be worried about.

If it truly bothers you, I would try the tighter valve clearances recommended by @Chrisn162001, especially for a tuned motor.

    Noise In Motor?

I’ve heard that pinging noise on many trucks the ones I was authorized to adjust valves on it went away with the valve lash adjustment.

    It’s not an FCA issue.

The noise is really not an issue at all.

Cummins are noisy trucks, especially once tuned.

As Ak Bob said, there would be a list of other issues if it was the FCA.

10 and 26 are for emissions trucks when you remove the EGR stuff the recommended lash is .010 and .020 allowable spec .006 - .015 intake and .015 - .030 exhaust.

The tighter side of the spec keeps the engine running quieter and a little smoother at idle.

When adjusting valves, I recommend a go - no go type feeler gauge.

I’ve checked lash after they have just been adjusted by someone else and find they are still off quite a bit.

I was checking out this thread, and I didn't even realize they make go no go feeler gauges.

I just ordered some for when I do my studs so I can go back and recheck my adjustments.

    Thanks.

    Thank you for the information.

I'll try doing a tighter lash on it to see if it goes away.

I also used the go no go feelers to do the lash to where it just has a little drag between when I try to pull it out.

I appreciate all your feedback and help, I just want to make sure this motor lasts, I'm currently sitting at 133k miles so far.
