    Re: Noise In Motor?

Quick update, I did a tighter lash of .10 intake and .20 exhaust.

It quieted the motor, but the pinging was still there.

I pulled out a long metal rod, held it to one end, and listened to different spots.

I put it to each injector tube, and number 3 was a loud ping noise compared to the others, so maybe it's going bad?

    What are your thoughts?

Do you have the little rubber isolators on the injector lines?

Does the pinging go away if you put firm hand pressure on the line?

I haven't tried that yet, but I can try; I did take the foam off the injector lines.

Could the pinging damage the injectors?

    Re: Noise In Motor?

No, I wouldn’t worry about too much.

I believe I know exactly what sound you are talking about now.

I often hear it more on trucks with the foam removed or with missing rubber isolators on the older models.

    Try to press the line.

You can cut some rubber hose and put it on the fuel lines if it goes away.

I’ve seen a lot of trucks over the years with that noise.

I have never seen that noise as a symptom or precursor of injector failure.

These engines make a lot of noise and have a ton of harmonics.

If I listen to my truck too often or for too long, my mind goes crazy, and I wind up pulling my valve cover only to find everything is perfectly fine LOL.

    Re: Noise In Motor?

I put the foam noise damper back on, which masked the noise slightly.

It sounds off to me; maybe I'm just getting paranoid since it's at 134k miles?

Knocking or valve train noise is my worry, I guess.

    Re: Noise In Motor?

I wanted to post a minor update on my noise to keep people in the loop if they were interested.

I purchased some Lucas Injector cleaner/lube and poured about 10oz into my tank when I filled it up, and I want to say, wow, what a difference in the injector noise.

I'd say it's about an 80-90% reduction in noise.

I was shocked, to say the least, mainly since I use everyday diesel from Hotshots 2oz at every fill.

I'll run this for a bit and see if it improves my #3 injector noise.

I will update you when I've either replaced the injector or decided it's no longer an issue.

I appreciate all your replies so far, though.

That's all I have run in my truck.

It's well worth the cost for every or every other fuel up.

    Re: Noise In Motor?

Hey, I want to give a quick update.

I replaced the number 3 injected, and the pinging is still there.

I'm just chalking it up to normal injector event noise.

The piston head on number 3 had an uneven burn though for sure, I stuck a bite scope down the injector hole and saw carbon build up on half of it and a lot of carbon on the nozzle.

The truck runs a little smoother now, though.
