Thread: RAM Aisin Trans Woes After Weight Loss?

RAM Aisin Trans Woes After Weight Loss?

    17 3500 RC SRW Aisin.

80k miles, DRD single 30hp, Full weight loss tune

VERY hard to 2-3 upshift after a 3-2 downshift; the tow/haul is engaged, and im coming off the EB.

If I drive the crap out of it, it's okay, but that is not my driving style.

Upshifts have been a little lazy, too, after programing.

Ive turned off hill start assist and traction control.

Shifts firmed up a little after that, but now the 2-3 upshift is hitting hard all the time, again, unless Im at 45% throttle or more.

The harder I drive, the better it shifts, but that driving style is a little aggressive for the roads around here, and its a waste of fuel.

I've got probably 100 miles on it so far.

Is it just a matter of driving it more aggressively until the trans stops being stupid?

Do I need to perform some re-learn?

Can a re-learn be done with AlfaOBD?

    Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately, AlfaOBD only supports the 68RFE relearn.

I suspect it’s due to the proprietary nature of our Aisin transmission.

To my knowledge, we would need to return to the dealership for a relearn.

Have you gone over 30K since the last fluid and filter change?

I figured AlfaOBD wouldn't do anything for me.

Fluid and filter were done on schedule.

Fluid isn't due for another 10k.

Trans also shifted perfectly before the tune.

I'm not sure a fluid change would net any results.

As I am sure you are aware, DRD tuning does not tune our Aisin transmission, so at best, you only look at a conservative 30HP gain in engine performance.

Mine has adapted well to the 90HP tune.

Personally, I would rule out tuning as a cause.

I would have the relearn done and check for any transmission updates while at the dealership.

I would try to find a way to get it to re-learn, but also message or call DRD; they might have another tune to help with the harsh shifting.

I know it’s not a trans tune being an Aisin but maybe the de-fueling or lack thereof?

The sweet spot seems to be 90HP with the Aisin trans.

Also, it takes 200-300 miles for the trans to learn the tuning.

I'm aware Aisins can not be tuned.

I'm trying to avoid a trip to the dealership.

The service department at my local dealership is an utter joke.

I contacted DRD, the only suggestion was to come here looking for answers.

RPMs flares between the 2-3 shift, then bangs in to 3rd.

I dont know if that would be a tuning issue.

I feel its more likely that the trans isnt doing what it should be and activating the clutch pack as quickly or smoothly as it should.

Im not interested in a 90hp tune.

The truck spends 98% of its life with a trailer behind it.

I honestly didnt even really want 30hp, but that was my option.

I drove it again today, and the 2-3 upshift is the same.

Maybe SLIGHTLY better, but all of the other shifts up or down, have gotten better since the first day.

    Slightly firmer and faster.

Although the Aisin isnt exactly a decent shifting trans to begin with, so I use those terms relative to the characteristics of the Aisin.

I've only got a total of many 150 miles on it since tuning.

I'll give it to 500 miles, before I try taking it to the dealer for a relearn.

I can drive around the 2-3 upshift issue if I pay attention and make sure throttle is over 50%.

Its hard to do, I'm a 30% throttle kinda guy LOL.

    Please keep us updated.

I’m about to pull the trigger on my ‘22 with a low hp tune and don’t want a similar issue.

I know ‘22 trans and factory trans tuning, but be slightly different, but it still makes me worry.

Issues with the Aisin were my biggest worry.
