2nd gen swap vs. 3rd gen swap

    Hi there!

I’ve done some research, but not too much, though.

What’s the difference between the second-gen swap and the third-gen swap?

    I can’t find anything.

Is one better than the other?

Can you still use the exhaust brake with the third-gen turbo?

Can someone point me in the right direction?

    I have a 2017 2500 weight loss kit.

    Thank you all!

Re: 2nd gen swap vs. 3rd gen swap

3rd Gen and up have the VGT turbo that actuates the veins to engage when commanded " Exhaust brake."

They are great turbo's; the only common issues are the actuator itself gumming up or failing.

Most do the swap for getting away from the actuator issues, but you lose the Brake doing the swap.

However, you can do the 2g swap and buy a inline Brake for a purpose of still having one to use.

They work similar in the terms of slowing down or pulling weight, but it's a different mechanical way.

There's pros and cons to either way.

2g: Lower EGT'S, more flow, requires studs to be safe, injectors if you go bigger than a S464, an some pixi dust to help everything work together.

What's your plans for the truck?

    Do you pull? Weekend truck?

Chase the HP & TQ numbers?

Hope this kind of helps a bit, ask all the questions you can think of.
