Thread: 2015 Exhaust Brake Issues?

    2015 Exhaust Brake Issues?

The other day, I towed a relatively light load of around 5,000 pounds.

I live in Washington state, so we have many steep hills to climb and descend around here.

With the tow-haul mode on and the auto exhaust brake, I didn't appear to be getting any actual exhaust braking while descending the hills or slowing down.

While going down a hill, the exhaust brake usually kicks on to keep the truck at the desired speed I set.

To maintain speed, the truck uses a combination of down-shifting and kicking the brake on.

Well, this whole 600-mile trip, the truck would downshift but not kick the exhaust brake on.

The exhaust brake on the gauge would indicate a small amount of exhaust brake pressure, but it was either so minimal it didn't have any effect, or it was lying.

I couldn't feel it working like it usually does.

A little background on the truck. 2015 6.7 with 92,000 miles and I deleted and tuned a year ago with the DRD tunes.

Currently have the P00AF code for turbocharger boost control module performance.

Im aware Im going to need a new turbo/actuator soon, but on this trip, I didn't have any turbo issues.

After reading what other people say about that code, I should be losing turbo and exhaust brake performance.

The turbo worked fine the whole trip.

The question is: would I start losing exhaust brake performance without losing turbo performance?

The turbo was usually operating the whole trip and the exhaust brake was not.

I already have a plan on the horizon to buy a new turbo actuator from City Diesel.

I also looked up my VIN, which is part of the select few 2015 trucks' extended warranty group for the turbo actuators—hoping to get reimbursed when I purchase a new actuator.

    Any thoughts would help.

    Thanks

When you say the turbo worked fine, did you monitor VGT actual vs. desired?

I will post an attachment for your trouble code when I arrive home.

Edit: See attached for troubleshooting information on P00AF.

I should say that the turbo was creating boost pressure.

It got up to normal pressures while towing.

I just assumed that that meant it was working correctly.

    Am I wrong about that?

I did not monitor VGT actual vs. desired.

You will probably see that the VGT does not always mirror the desired.

It can be difficult to spot them on the MM3 monitor while driving, depending on their distance apart.

If this is the case, you may need to save a data log and plot them on a graph.

    See the example attached.

If your actual and desired don’t match, and the actuator connections are tight and clean, then I believe you are on the right track with the actuator.

The City Diesel unit is a great choice; I can attest to that.

You will also need to check that the turbo vanes are not sticking and the turbo gear paw is okay.

    Re: 2015 Exhaust Brake Issues?

    This is fantastic information.

I am getting a P00AF code, no exhaust brake, and it seems like there is a lack of boost, full throttle going up a slight grade, the truck would not shift out of 6th, and boost was only about 28 lbs.

I hit 35-36 with DRD tuning in similar situations, usually.

Here is my data graph; it looks like I have an actuator issue.

I have not checked the wiring or pulled the actuator to fit the turbo for stuck vanes, but what do you all think?

    Thanks,
    Brent

Agree looks like an actuator issue to me, the way it’s dropping the vanes open.

    Hopefully, others will chime in.

    Re: 2015 Exhaust Brake Issues?

So I think the next step is to check the actuator wiring and connections, then replace the actuator if all looks good.

I don’t see any evidence of vanes sticking in the graph.

    I like your graph.

Did you import the data from the MM3 or use a scan tool?

    Please keep us posted. @BrentM
