    Transmission 68RFE Valve Body Upgrade?

I recently had a new upgraded valve body put into my transmission at a shop.

It went through the relearn, and it doesn’t seem to shift right. It will rev high and won’t shift out of 3rd until I let off, and then it will shift to 4th and occasionally does it from 4th to 5th. I have a little over 300miles on it now.

Also, it doesn’t seem to have increased line pressure like I thought it would; it runs around 120 to 130.

Has anyone had any problems like this?

Who did the rebuild and installation of the valve body (all transmission shops)?

    What components were rebuilt/replaced etc.?

Who did the retune for the increased line pressure?

    Something does not sound right.

According to Randy's Transmissions video, you should see the increased line pressure right away, so if you aren't, then either something is off mechanically or via the TCM tuning.

GDP tuning, and for the desired line pressure, it’s at 170.

The kit they used is T72165bhp which says it’s supposed to be tuneless.

When I look the number up, it shows it comes from transgo.com.

And a shop did the installation, so I figured I would check into it before I had to bring it back.

I get the whole tuneless VB thing, but I thought the pump had to be modified for that to work properly.

I would check with the shop that did the installation.

    Correct.

Tuneless doesn’t mean you’ll have higher line pressure.

It just really is meant to prevent cross leaks.

Unless you get an in-line trans pressure increaser, you’ll need a new tune.

And if it doesn’t shift right, it sounds like they messed something up.

    Not sure about your finances.

I would toss that and get a billet valve body from Revmax and a tune to take advantage of better shifting and higher line pressures.

These trans benefit greatly from higher line pressures and fewer cross leaks from the better valve body and gaskets.

Re: Transmission 68RFE Valve Body Upgrade?

The transgo tuneless kit ramps up line pressure to 210psi at the clutch’s and limits the converter to 180psi.

You have to mod the pump and the valve body.

You won’t see the line pressure increase on a scan tool if you check psi on a scan tool or monitor it will read stock pressure.

My transgo rep explained to me that the pressure increase isn’t in the line pressure circuit so the sensor won’t see it.

If it did the pressure wouldn’t match desired and would cause issues.

Only the clutch feed circuits will see the added line pressure.

The pressure rise ramps at factory rate just 30% more psi.

Tuneless kits have their place imo that place is stock trucks with stock size tires.

Tuning will always be the better option.

With tuning you get the sprag fix you get shift timing and converter lock up adjustments.

With bigger tires you want tuning so you don’t lug the engine in 5th and 6th.

I’m sorry, but that is completely incorrect.

You will destroy your transmission if you add a tune for higher line pressure or an inline booster on a tuneless kit.
