Thread: Exhaust Brake, Turbo, Or Actuator?

    Exhaust Brake, Turbo, Or Actuator?

    Good afternoon.

On my way to work this morning, I was driving with the exhaust brake on; I was doing about 75mph.

While i approached my exit, I let off the pedal, and the brake started to slow me down.

It sounded a little different than usual and it felt like it was bogging down.

I gave it more fuel, and i noticed it was blowing smoke when I gave it more fuel.

I pushed the button for the EB, turning it off.

The smoke went away, and it ran fine.

I took a trip for lunch and checked it out again.

Around 40 mph, the EB works fine, slows you down to about 35, and then disengages.

    No Smoke.

I plugged in the tester, and no codes came up.

I've been reading on here about the actuator having issues, I'll check connections when I get home tonight.

    Has anyone had this problem?

It has a 5" pipe, EFI Live.

    Thanks for any feedback

The best bet, plug in a scan tool and check the actual vs. desired when working the brake.

They should be fairly symmetrical with each other.

If the number is deviated by a noticeable number, it could be the first sign of an actuator going out.

What I would do, or what people have done, is put a good load on it with the brake on and burn off the accumulated carbon.

Hopefully, this will clear the symptom up.

If you suspect the turbo vanes are sticking, keep using the exhaust brake and try running some fuel system cleaner.

    Thank you.

I forgot to mention I have around 240,000 miles on the truck.

I'm sure it has accumulated a lot of carbon.
