Thread: Thread Sealant?

  1. Top Of Page | #1

    Thread Sealant?

Have to redo my oil filter relocation lines.

I didn't use enough liquid thread sealant the 1st time, so I developed a leak.

Can I use liquid thread sealant, or should I go with Teflon tape now that the threads are contaminated with oil?

In the middle of it now, so trying to figure out what will work.

    Thanks

    Re: Thread Sealant?

I would clean the threads with alcohol and use three wraps of Teflon tape, be sure to wrap in the opposite direction to the threads, and don’t allow any tape to enter the oil passage.

If you decide to use the Teflon pipe dope, clean the threads with alcohol and apply a good layer around the threads.

Some of the plumbers I have worked with will use tape and the dope.

One thing to remember when using the tape is don’t do too many wraps as you can cause the housing to crack.

    Re: Thread Sealant?

Thanks, that's what I wound up doing.

    It's the Amsoil universal kit.

I doubt the housing will crack on it as it seems pretty stout.

I'm unsure if the threaded oil line fittings in the housing are leaking or if the bronze nut that tightened the housing to the block worked itself loose.

I had to take the lines off anyways to tighten everything down.

    We'll see how it goes.

    Thanks again.

    Permatex 80019 Aviation Form-A-Gasket No.

3 Sealant is an excellent thread sealant.

Holds up to hi-temps and harsh chemicals, including diesel fuel and oil.
