Thread: Low Coolant Level Code?

    Low Coolant Level Code?

So about a month or so ago, I got a low coolant level code on the dash after recently doing the replacement radiator and new Amsoil coolant.

Obviously, I checked the coolant, and it wasn't low, and as a matter of fact, it's always a half-inch above minimum cold.

So I know there is a sensor on the bottom of the reservoir tank.

I was headed out that day to get the new sensor, and the code randomly went away.

I ended up replacing the sensor anyway, figuring it was possibly going bad, and the sensor was only twenty-five dollars to replace.

So everything went well on a replacement at that time.

Now fast forward a month or more later, and yesterday the stupid code came back.

Again the coolant is right where it was over a month ago.

So I did some research, and apparently, there is a magnet in the reservoir and changing the sensor only won't correct the issue.

You have to replace the whole coolant tank due to stuff possibly messing with the magnet in there.

Has anyone had this issue or experience?

I am assuming I just loosened some crude in there to trip the sensor, and I am probably better off just getting a new tank.

I wouldn't say I like having random codes to ignore.

I wanted to fix it, as it annoys me.

Thanks, everyone, and I appreciate any feedback.

Have you tried cleaning the inside of the coolant tank?

We’re you running the same Amsoil coolant before replacing the radiator?

Is the Amsoil coolant the OAT type?

I am concerned that you may have mixed OAT with non-OAT, a possibility causing this issue.

I had just started using the Amsoil stuff when I did the radiator.

It says it's OAT and can be mixed with any other color of OAT coolant.

I ended up picking up a Dorman replacement tank today and installing it.

So far on startup, no codes.

The old tank was a little nasty as far as the stuff on the sides of the tank.

I heard a float in there can get stuck, and that's exactly what I think happened.

The last picture is the new tank installed.

I sure hope the Amsoil stuff is ok.

I checked the OAT rating before, and here are some pics.

Looks good now; it should be okay.

Apparently, the Amsoil coolant you used is OAT.

    Please keep us posted.

I wish I did OEM coolant because it's ten years vs. five; I believe these cooling systems are sensitive.

It's in there, so time will tell, but I think it will be all good, and it gives me an excuse to change it sooner.

I have 81xxx on the odometer.

The low coolant light came on.

    Nothing is low.

Instead of spending $200+, spend $20 and replace the sensor.

Be prepared to get mad when attempting to remove the sensor; it’s a pain.

Probably easiest to grab hold of the two metal prongs sticking down with two pliers.

    Wiggle and pull simultaneously.

Wear gloves unless you dont mind bleeding.

No more low coolant light on the dash.

It has been a couple of days now, and the light on the truck for the coolant came back on.

Guess I’m going to see if I can clean the bottle; otherwise, I’ll spend $200 on a new reservoir tank.

Yeah, a float in the tank can’t be removed.

It gets plugged with casting sand from the block manufacturing process.

You can try to flush it out.

I replace the tanks when the low light comes on.

    Re: Low Coolant Level Code?

So inside the reservoir is a floating device that can communicate with the sensor through the plastic?

This is almost like a magnet put; the magnet is covered in corrosion which does not allow the sensor to pick up the fluid level.

    Is this correct?

Yes, that's how I understand it.

It's not worth changing out, just the sensor I also tried.

If you are having issues, do the entire tank.

Dorman makes one that is way cheaper than oem.
