I'm Thinking I Need An ECM

    I have a 2013 3500 DRW, 131K.

Deleted running DRD standard setup at plus 60 hp.

For the last year, I have been tracking down the occasional bong on the dash, and the tpms light will flash, but this truck is pre tmps for DRW.

We have pulled and checked connections at TIPM.

All were clean, and we added di-electric.

I checked the CAN connections, and all look good; I checked the chassis and engine grounds.

Batteries have been replaced, and the load test is at 100%.

Changed out Alternator with now is putting out much more steady voltage reading.

After all of this, I still have the bong, and in the last 1000 miles, it has gotten worse, and now I'm driving; I get every message under the sun while driving.

The truck runs perfect, but while going down the road, I have gotten trailer brakes to need service, parking sensors off, dash has gone blank and rebooted, the dash will say to depress the brake and push start (while running), abs needs serviced, brake light (for parking brake) flashes, traction loss flashes.

All while happily driving down the road running just fine.

Codes are currently logged during this last 15 minutes test drive.

    P0513: Incorrect Immobilizer key
U0102: Lost comm with transfer case ctrl mod
U0121: Lost comm with ABS (ABS) ctrl mod
U0140: Lost Comm with body ctrl mod
U0155: Lost comm with instrument panel cluster ctrl mod
U0121: Lost comm with steering column ctrl mod
U0415: Invalid data received from abs ctrl mod
U1412: Implausible vehicle speed signal received

Before the last 250 miles, I occasionally got the lost comm with steering column code logged, but none of the others.

Before the last few hundred miles, the bong was usually always at low RPM, under 1500, and under load.

Now it is all the time.

It does this on dry and wet days, so I don't think it is water.

I have also tried reprogramming with the MM3 with a battery charger hooked up. Made no improvement.

Any thoughts on anything I could be missing, and whether anyone has replaced an ECM, and what was involved?

    Thanks.

My thoughts is a bad TIPM, but I could be wrong.

I have had the TIPM out to inspect it, and it was clean.

It has been about 9 months, though, and much can happen in that time.

I will pull it again to inspect it.

Is there much else I can check other than corrosion at the pins?

I’m thinking of pulling it, checking all the pins on the back, and pulling every fuse and relay to inspect on the top.

Any other suggestions while it’s out?

    Thanks!

TIPMs have internal circuit boards that can fail.

So they may look fine but have issues.

    Thanks, Ray.

TIPM is about $500, and PCM is about $1000.

I’m thinking of giving the TIPM a shot.

The MM3 from you writes to the PCM with no errors.

I would think I might get a code if the PCM was toast.

TIPM is easier to replace, also.

    I ordered the TIPM.

I’ll keep everyone posted on the result.

Re: I'm Thinking I Need An ECM

    My TIPM challenge continues.

I ordered a refurbished TIPM with a warranty and waited three weeks for it (part delays).

I got it and installed it with the batteries disconnected.

When I powered up the truck, all the warnings were gone.

I went to start, and it cranks but no start.

I followed the instructions to do a hard reset, and still nothing.

I contacted the company, and they had me send it back.

I have another unit from them, the same part but a different unit, as the markings on it are different, and I am facing the same thing.

Further research has led me to find that some trucks will not connect to the TIPM like they are supposed to, and those end up needing to be programmed manually.

The truck starts if I put the old unit back in, but I get all the error messages.

My first thought is possible to return the stock file to the truck and install the new unit and see if there is any possibility that it affects the initial installation.

    Things I need advice on:
    1) If I put the old unit in and return the truck to stock, what happens if I try and start it to verify it will start? It will throw a ton of codes, but will I cause something I have a blindspot on?
    2) I think I will then install the new TIPM and, with the stock program, see if it starts. If so, then retune the truck, and it should be good.
    3) I have a good resource who has a repair facility, and they have the Mopar software. I need this truck running by Friday, and I do not know if I can get it in. Should I push in that direction?

Thanks for all the help; the saga continues.

It may be worth a try, but I don’t know.

@DRD any advice or suggestions on this would be appreciated.

Re: I'm Thinking I Need An ECM

For anyone following this in the future, here are the high points.

I took it to a local facility that has the Chrysler software.

Starting in 2013, they term the unit we all know as a TIPM as a control module.

They do not auto-program as a TIPM does.

So it had to be programmed.

Once programmed, the truck starts, but it is still throwing random u codes from loss of communication.

They are going through it, and I will report when the problem is solved.

So did you replace the Fuse Box “PDM” (Power Distribution Module)?
