    VGT Issues

    The truck is a 2018 3500, 51,000 miles.

RaceME Ultra with supporting changes to run the said device.

Stock head fasteners and EB on 98% of the time.

The other day on the way home from work, the turbo seemed as if it was making boost way quicker than usual, followed by the actuator not doing its job and boost spiking up into the over 40psi range if I didn’t get off the throttle, followed by a nasty turbo bark. (think blow off valve on a rice burner) type sound exhaust break had become weak.

Put it in tow haul mode and got the rpm’s way up locked into 4th, then downshifted into 3rd and let the exhaust break scream.

That seems to have fixed it at the moment, on multiple occasions now.

Is a new turbo/actuator failure soon?

Very rarely tow with it; the heaviest thing it sees is pulling out stuck Freightliner bucket trucks at work.

Always run it hard, to be honest, and avoid long idle times.

I was thinking about a 3rd Gen manifold from an early 6.7L and a flange adaptor to accommodate a T4 bolt pattern S464 or S467 turbo, with head studs5 and a water/meth setup in that useless tank next to my fuel fill cap.

I don’t mind adding a CP3 and lift pump to feed some injectors later, but it’s not in the cards here and now.

    Have tig machine.

Can fabricate intake setup or lobster cut some exhaust tubing to make something work.

Would going to a high mount (2nd gen) intake be worth the extra work?

It sounds like your turbo vein or actuator was sticking, but you should have been setting trouble codes.

    I'm a firm believer on 2G swaps.

    IMO, worth every dollar.

You rarely tow; you can still get an inline Pac brake down the road.

The EB function is excellent, don't get me wrong.

You'll notice a common issue on our forms "actuators acting up."

@DDP can get you a new VGT turbo; I haven't asked if they do 2G or not

It would be very beneficial for you to reach out and ask friends!

    Re: VGT Issues

I’m torn between a 2G swap and compounding over stock to keep the EB; that way, if worse comes to worst, I can just throw a non-VGT turbo in place of the stocker and still be more than content with the power level.

A buddy of mine has an obs ford with an S300/S400 setup on it.

Things are just a little quicker than my truck in the +200hp mode until mine starts shifting and the 4R110 trans doesn’t.

Here’s a pic from the 4th of July, on the PCH in Malibu.
