    2012 Suspension Help/Intermittent Vibration

    Good afternoon all.

I was looking for some pointers chasing an intermittent rattle/vibration I have.

I feel like if you have blown shocks or a loose spring, almost

I’m feeling it in my steering wheel; intermittently.

It seems to happen more often on less smooth roads.

I don’t feel it happening on the freeway.

It is not speed sensitive or directional; meaning-making tight turns.

So far, I’ve replaced my shocks and sprigs (set of leveling) springs from tuftTruck springs.

    Shocks are 5100s.

ive also replaced my front steering assembly (drag link/tie rod ends)

I’ve replaced my steering stabilizers as well and adjusted my steering gearbox.

The truck drives straight/brakes great, and the ball joints seem in good shape. Slight play vertical nothing latterly

This has been driving me up a wall for about a month now, and I can’t pinpoint where it is coming from.

I’m leaning towards my steering gearbox and steering shaft, but I thought maybe I’d reach out and see if anyone else has experienced something similar. It’s more of a rattle than anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked your wheel bearing hubs?

Rotate your tires and have them balanced to eliminate that also.

I'll pull my wheel off and inspect, although I recently had the truck serviced, and they "inspected" my hubs and said they were good.

Not sure about the balance as it doesn't feel like a balance issue.

It's more of a rattling feeling than a vibration.

It doesn't cause my wheel to shake or pull the truck left/right.

The only thing I can compare it to is if your shocks were blown and you were riding on springs, which isn't the case but the closest thing I think I can compare it to.

On smooth roads, it doesn't happen.

I will say that tightening up my steering gearbox seemed to help out some.

Is there supposed to be any play where the intermediate shaft connects to the steering shaft?

It feels like I have some play in it.

Enough to cause noise when moving up and down.

You may have worn U joints on the intermediate steering shaft.

This video has some good information that may help.

If you go with a new steering box, I strongly recommend a redhead 6 bolt steering box with a support brace.

You will have zero play, and they do stand behind their warranty if something were to go wrong or bad/leaks.

I went ahead and got a new shaft on order.

It seems most likely the culprit of what I’m experiencing.

I had my wife hold on to the wheel while twisting the shaft, and she did the same for me, and it feels a lot like the rattle I’m feeling while driving.

It might explain why I’m not feeling it on smooth roads, as the truck isn’t bouncing, causing that shaft to bounce around at the joint.

Amazon so should have it in a few days seems like it takes maybe an hour to throw it.

    Wasn’t the steering shaft.

This is driving me up a wall.

    Very disappointing news.

Any other ideas or suggestions out there, guys or gals?

    I will say it’s a lot better.

I decided to take it out for a nice long drive to see.

I did tighten my gearing box up as well.

Starting to chalk it up to just being a Dodge at this point
