Extra O-Ring In Fuel Filter? What's It For?

I am changing my under-hood fuel filter.

Unscrewed the cap using the 28mm socket, and I pulled the old filter out.

I looked down into the black housing to see if anything in there.

There was an O-RING lying there loose in the bottom of the housing.

Not the one that seals the cap on the outside (at the bottom of the threads).

That one outside was still in place, and I hadn't pulled it off yet.

This one is smaller and thinner. (See attached picture).

The larger o-ring in the pic is the one that seals the cap.

The mystery ring is inside it, and you can see how much smaller and thinner it is by comparison.

I have no idea where this is supposed to go, how it got there, or if I need to put it back somewhere.

    Is it important?

    Can I drive without it?

    Need truck tomorrow.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Wondering if the smaller O ring was from the bottom of the old filter or a previously removed filter.

Did you test the mystery O ring to see if it fits on the bottom of the old filter?

Throw it away and install the new filter.

It’s not part of the housing.

My guess is it’s from some aftermarket filter.
