    Ticking/Knocking Noise Help

I bought a 2021 3500 with the 6.7L in September last year; I just rolled 76xx miles and did my first oil change.

A few days/week or so ago, I started hearing what sounds like the old Hemi “manifold tick” upon further investigation, I heard nothing while the truck idles; the second it hits 1300 rpm or higher, it makes a wicked ticking noise that sounds like it’s either in the oil pan or the trans bell housing.

The truck has been “deleted” for around 1500 miles, I don’t beat on it (often), but I do enjoy having fun now and again.

The oil I used during the change was Rotella t5 15w40 at first! I got told it was wrong and switched it out for 10w30.

Has anyone else experienced something like that?

I'm not sure how to post a video, but I’m willing to send it via email to anyone who would like to listen or text.

    Thanks, I’m in advance.

My 2019 occasionally has a typewriter tick. Started after my first oil change, however I used 5w-40 not 15w-40 .

It will tick from idle to about 1100 rpm's and then seems to go away.

Currently has 43k and never misses a beat.

Just figured its a diesel making diesel sounds and ignore it

Yeah, it’s pretty harsh sounding almost sounds like it’s in the oil pan, or you can hear it well in the passenger wheel.

Yeah, it says you may have something different going on.

How many miles was it driven on 15W-40?

Maybe 400, then I switched it out for the 10W30.

It still makes the ticking/knocking, a lot of people have told me just to run it, no engine fines or anything, so go until it blows, I guess.

Sounds to me like the same sound the 5.7L & 6.4L Hemi engines made due to the Horrific / Weak Design of the Hydraulic Roller Cam & Lifters.

That sound was diagnosed to be all over the engine at times - but ended up being in the upper valve train.

Devin: Pardon my ignorance, but does your 21 3500 have the HO 6.7L CTD? - If Not -----> Ignore my Comment above!

Get a free oil sample kit from Blackstone and send it in.

I'd want to make sure that it's not causing any harm and won't leave me stranded.

It could be nothing, but it also could be something.

The sample kit is free and only costs about 20 bucks to get a readout of how the engine is doing.

    Peace of mind for sure!

    Ticking/Knocking Noise Help

It sounds weird, but when there is an exhaust leak at or near the exhaust manifold, it can sound like a tick.

Sometimes worse when it’s cold, sometimes worse after it warms up, changes with load, RPM, etc.

If the noise happens in the park, get a small piece of pipe, move it around, and listen.

Also, look for telltale signs of black soot around the manifold and collector.

Willing to bet it's your lifters.

They switched to hydraulic in 2019 and have had some issues with them.

Devin: ignore my HO 6.7L CTD question - I keep forgetting both 6.7L CTD (Standard & HO Version) now incorporate the Hydraulic Roller Cam/Lifter design.

I also hope you get this figured out & it turns out to be only a specific noise this newer design 6.7L makes.
