Question or Thoughts on Ford & GM Diesel Vented Exhaust Tips

My Brain never shuts off - woke up this morning with this Question & Thought rolling around in my empty brain.

Are these vents in place upstream of the exhaust tips to cool the hot exhaust during Regen (before it exits)?
Just curious the main reason why these 2 added this feature and Ram didn't.

If this Topic has been covered before - I apologize!

Early on, I figured it may have been to fool the tailpipe sniffer?

I do think it probably is for cooling as well. Either way, those tips look goofy!

Re: Question or Thoughts on Ford & GM Diesel Vented Exhaust Tips

My first initial thoughts was to suck in cooler air into the hot exhaust steam to help cool the exit exhaust (Before Exiting) - so it would not possibly damage the paint (above) the exit of the tip. (Sinse most diesel exhaust tips don't exit way past the lower painted body panel.

Even though the Duramax exhaust tip exits blow the back bumper. (Maybe I'm totally missing the real reason) just thinking out loud - which really most the time makes me look & feel like one of those special window lickers.

Never a dumb question on this forum.

I want an official explanation as well.

They still look goofy to me. To me, everything about the GMs looks like an abortion case that lived.

Just saw a dually gm yesterday and realized, ugh, front fenders indent and rears protrude, fugly as hell.

That exhaust is coming out at a strange angle, ugh!

Then the def tank hung down under the passenger side a few years back.

Great question, I couldn’t find much on these vented tips, but it appears they are primarily for cooling the exhaust.

    Mr Bob!

I didn't spend much time researching my question - due to it's possibly irrelevant to most - I was mainly curious (I guess) why Ram chose not to implement the idea.

That's why the RAMS are so much “cooler” than any ford or Chevy.

Maybe the 6.7L CTD system has a cooler Regen exit (Temps) when compared to the Ford or GM and felt no need?

Re: Question or Thoughts on Ford & GM Diesel Vented Exhaust Tips

Since I can no longer edit the above post, I'm looking at a trend from my OBD Fusion App on my phone, and my Regen temps (Exit DPF) seem to stay around 1158*F.

Possibly next spring - this issue will be irrelevant.
