Thought It Was A Scam - Extented Warranties

Let me start by saying I always thought that extended warranties were a scam, but I purchased my 2018 about four months ago and decided to bite the bullet on one through the dealership because of the mileage.

I only got the powertrain and major mechanical systems and paid about $3800 out the door, and I'm so glad I did!

The whole front end has been replaced; the only original thing left is the axle.

Been in the shop for the past two weeks getting a new transmission and the rear main seal.

I'll pretty much have a new truck.

Glad I waited to let parts fall off.

This is just a post to vent; I haven't had the chance to enjoy the truck!

I had the same thing on my 2012 at the RAM dealership.

Came out to be $6800, and I paid $4500 at my credit union for a warranty.

All I paid on any repair was a $100 deductible.

All in all, the warranty covered about $12k in repairs.

    My total $400.00.

Wouldn't your total be $4,900 including the upfront cost of the warranty?

Still a good deal for 12k in repairs though.

Yes, but when financed at 1.99% in truck loan, it beats the heck out $6k plus out of pocket and all done by the dealership.

I paid it out of pocket on my 04.5 when everything wore out at the local shop.

That was over $4k then, and I don't care how to do the math.

It saved me a hell of a lot of cash.

Similar experience with my wife's 2017 Grand Cherokee Overland.

It was certified pre-owned, and we got the extended warranty through Chrysler for $2200.

The air ride failed, and the resulting repairs were over $3000, so it already paid for itself.

My Truck: 2016 Ram 3500 Laramie, granite crystal metallic/tan interior, CCLB SRW 4x4, 68RFE, 6.7 Cummins, rear air, 5th wheel pkg. MODS: MM3 w/tunes, EGR delete, ITC grid heater delete, GDP airhorn, GDP heater, ARP 625 head studs, FloPro 5", REVMAX billet VB, Synergy steering, Thuren .5" lift/sway, Fox remote res shocks, Morimoto HIDs and LED fogs.
My 5th Wheel: 2022 Grand Design 390 RK, 3 ACs, Gen Prep, too much storage ~16,000 rolling.

Glad it worked out for you citrusrunner17.

    I have a 7-year warranty on my 3500.

While I tremble at the thought of letting a dealership touch my truck if something big should blow I'd gladly flatbed the old girl into their shop and listen to them cry about how no matter what is wrong with my truck it's somehow not covered.

And feel free to "vent" your issues!

I'm not a huge fan of letting them touch it either, but I'm all about it when I can save a few pennies.

They won't be touching anything else.

I prefer to do my own upgrades and maintenance, but the 5 free oil changes do come in handy.

100% agree in the sense that.

I have done the recalls and other small stuff myself, but if any big money things should break, I would be a fool not to use the warranty I paid for.

Fortunately, I have had no expensive problems thus far.

Glad you got your money's worth on your warranty!

The only time I bought a warranty from the dealer, the warranty company went out of business, and I lost $2,700.

Eight or nine times out of 10 are a waste of money anyway.

Glad it worked out for you.

Re: Thought It Was A Scam - Extented Warranties

    Update.

Got the new transmission and steering gearbox in.

The truck still won't return to the center.

They say that someone ground the ball joints out before I bought it and that there is too much play in the new ones.

They told me I needed a new axle assembly and the warranty company denied it based on aftermarket ball joints from the previous owner.

Does anybody have any tips or tricks so that I don't have to replace the whole assembly?
