    2019+ Engine Oil Specification Question

OK, maybe someone here can enlighten me.

I recently purchased a 2020 RAM 2500 and noticed the manual calls for 10W-30 for warm climates and 5W-40 for cold temperatures or year-round use.

There is also a TSB stating that using 15w-40 oil could cause damage to the valve lash adjusters due to deposit build-up.

I always thought that 5W-40 and 15W-40 were the same when at operating temp.

So, my question is, why is it OK to use 5W-40 oil but not 15W-40?
    Kyle

The numbers before the “W” is actually “Winter Weight”.

So my guess is that Mopar is concerned that a 15W is too thick when cold and will not lubricate the hydraulic valve lifters adequately.

    Just my thoughts.

Re: 2019+ Engine Oil Specification Question

I've read reports of warranty work being done to the (Newer Hydraulic Lifters) failure due to running a Conventional 15W-40 HDEO in very cold climates.
The warranty work was voided - due to running the 15W-40!
I guess a Higher Quality UOA was used to determine the Conventional 15W-40 HDEO being run.

I feel an owner could get by with running a True PAO 15W-40 HDEO - due to it's much improved (Flow & Pumpability) properties.

But really not worth taking the chance!
I myself - will never be a fan of the (Oil Viscosity Sensitive) diesel motor design!

I'm curious - as millions of owners take their expensive HD Diesel Trucks to these fast lube places for service.
How many of these Fast Lube Places have in back 55gal Drums of ACTUAL HDEO 10W-30 (Most are Synthetic Blend) & Synthetic HDEO 5W-40?
That would make for one Expensive Oil Change Service!

    EDIT:
Kyle: Once up to operating temp --> The 5W-40 viscosity is very similar to the 15W-40 (Though not exact due to all the Viscosity Improvers) added.
Reason being you will Never Find a Conventional HDEO 5W-40!

Ive replaced 6 sets of lifters and camshaft under warranty now. Everyone of those used 15-40 motor oil.

I had warranty ask for oil change receipts and deny coverage on the last one I did.

I’m not in a cold climate quite the opposite here in south Texas. And trucks were local customers also.

That to me - (Just Me) - tells me that is one $hit Poor (Weak) Design!

This is only the HO 6.7L version, correct?

TSB doesn't differentiate, and it just says 2019+.

Mine is not HO and lists 10w-30 / 5w-40 in the owner's manual.

    Glad I noticed it.

Honestly don't even know why I looked.

I didn’t keep track, but I want to say most were non-HO 2500 models.

Re: 2019+ Engine Oil Specification Question

Just for my normal amusement - Reading and listening - If I recall (Only the Newer Designed HO 6.7L) has the Oil Viscosity Sensitive Upper Valve Train --> Hydraulic Lifters as well as Newer Designed (Lighter Weight Internals) as well as the Block. ----> Only Available in the 1-Ton (Possibly limited to the Aisin Transmission)

Once Again - Just my Thoughts & Opinion
    Follow your Owners Manual!

    NOTE:
For those who own the newer HO 6.7L Cummins!
If you don't do your OWN Services & take your Expensive Investment to those Fast Lube Service Establishments!

"Make Sure You Watch Them Closely and Monitor what Viscosity of HDEO they pump into your HO & SD 6.7L!"
I would not rely on them to know it REQUIRES the 10W-30 or 5W-40 HDEO to keep from Imploding!

I Hope & Wish the Best for these owners!
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: "This high-output (HO) rating is offered exclusively in the RAM 3500 equipped with the Aisin transmission option."

I remember now that the Aisin is the only trans that can handle the 1,075 lb-ft torque.

Another EDIT: What's the difference between 6.7 Cummins and high output?

The standard Cummins delivers 370 ponies while the High Output version pushes 400 horsepower.

Both engines feature a compacted graphite iron block, pushrod-operated overhead valves, and a high-pressure common rail fuel injection system in terms of internal, mechanical construction.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I stand corrected: The Standard 6.7L has the same upper valve train.

Tuning and more boost. Lower compression believed to be different pistons = HO 6.7L

Injectors should be the same as the CP4 failure kit is only a single part number.

Holy Crap! so glad I got my 2017!

    EDIT - 2/10
I guess another option with be the some what newer Viscosity HDEO 0W-40 (Created for those Extreme Colder Climates)
I know Rotella T6 has this version as well as Amsoil I think.
